The first English Premier League game staged at the centerpiece stadium of the London Olympics in 2012 served up some late drama Sunday, with new tenant West Ham scoring in the 85th minute to earn a 1-0 win over 10-man Bournemouth.
Bournemouth was left a man short by Harry Arterโs sending-off in the 77th, and West Ham took advantage when winger Michail Antonio met an inviting left-wing cross by Gokhan Tore with a header at the far post.
West Ham then needed a reaction save from goalkeeper Adrian followed by a clearance from near the goal-line to preserve its first league win at the teamโs new home. Having waved an emotional goodbye to Upton Park last season after 112 years there, West Ham is in the first year of the clubโs tenancy at the London Stadium and will take time to get used to the new surroundings.
Sunderland, and its new manager David Moyes, is also looking for its first point after a 2-1 loss to northeast rival Middlesbrough in the other game Sunday.
Barcelona, Spain
Bale, who excelled for Wales at this summerโs European Championship, led a Madrid side that was on the road for its Liga opener without Cristiano Ronaldo and several other first-choice players.
His second-minute header set Madrid on its way to a comfortable win that youngster Marco Asensio put beyond doubt with his second goal in as many matches for the reigning European champions.
Washington
Sarvas scored his first goal on a penalty kick in the 70th minute and Mullins got his first with a header off a corner kick in the 73rd as D.C. United (6-8-10) moved ahead of Orlando City on the red line in the Eastern Conference.
Both teams have 28 points, but D.C. holds the tiebreaker for the sixth spot.
The comeback was unexpected for the lowest scoring team in the MLS, especially after the Red Bulls (10-9-7), third in the East, took the lead on the soggy field. The delay came in the ninth minute.
Bradley Wright-Phillips, in the 38th minute, knocked in the perfect serve from Mike Grella. Wright-Phillips became the fourth player in league history to reach 15 goals in three consecutive seasons. Then in the 64th minute Felipe notched his third, pounding the ball into a small opening just inside the post.
