Lebanon — The city has opened several cooling shelters today to help the public deal with excessive heat expected over the next several days, according to a news release from the Lebanon Fire Department.

The locations are:

Upper Valley Senior Center, 10 Campbell St., today and Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lebanon Public Library, 9 East Park St., today, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kilton Public Library, 80 Main St., today, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Heat index is defined by the National Weather Service as a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored with the actual air temperature,” Fire Department officials said in the release. “As the heat index rises, so do the health risks.”

Especially vulnerable people include infants and small children under age 3, pregnant women, adults age 65 or older, people working under extreme conditions, people with drug or alcohol problems, and people with medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure.
