The Main Street Museum kicks off a big summer event not on First Friday, but the day after.
The museum’s annual Pan-Slavic Festival opens Saturday evening with a reception from 6 to 8. This year’s celebration of all things Slavic is dedicated to Belka and Strelka, the Soviet space dogs who were among the first animals sent into orbit and safely brought back to Earth.
That was in August 1960, and it was only the start of the story of the two dogs, who played a bit part in an ongoing Cold War drama.
Continuing with the space theme, museum director David Fairbanks Ford and fellow artist Petr Shvetsov have built a model of 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, a comet discovered by and named for a pair of Soviet astronomers in 1969.
