Grafton — Up to six people were displaced following a two-alarm fire in a multi-unit apartment building on Library Road late Friday afternoon.

Grafton Fire Chief John Babiarz said the fire started inside the electrical box on the side of the four-unit building, causing the two units nearest the box to catch fire. Firefighters were able to contain the flames to those two units and were able to prevent damage to the other units in the building, Babiarz said.

“We put in a rapid attack and were able to suppress initial flames,” Babiarz said after his department returned to the station.

He estimated damages to the building at $50,000.

Firefighters were able to save a nearby barn, as well as two dogs.

The building is near the Grafton Country Store, on Main Street, which was also untouched by the fire. The apartment building is owned by Anson Smith, an area property manager, according to the chief.

Smith said up to six tenants will be displaced, and that one unit suffered mainly water damage, while the other needed to be assessed but was more heavily damaged.

“I’ve got to try to get my electrician over there to re-establish power to the apartment building for the two units that are still usable,” Smith said.

The blaze broke out around 4 p.m.; Babiarz called it under control around 6:15 p.m.

No one was home in the unit nearest to the power box. Some tenants of the building were home at the time of the fire, but none of them was injured. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

The chief said Smith was working to assist tenants who couldn’t return to their apartments.
