Michael Hosmer, 46, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated domestic assault, one misdemeanor count of domestic assault and one misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment.
If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum sentence of more than 32 years in prison and $56,000 in fines.
Hosmer pleaded not guilty to the charges during an arraignment on Tuesday. His attorney, Jordana Levine of Marsicovetere Law Group in White River Junction, did not return a request for comment on Wednesday.
Royalton Police Chief James Beraldi responded to a reported assault around 4 p.m. on Monday on Johnson Hill Road, according to a police affidavit.
Michael Hosmer’s daughter, 22-year-old Jordan Hosmer, alleged her father had barged into the camper where she lives on his property and became enraged and violent while talking about his recent separation from her mother, according to the affidavit.
Jordan Hosmer told police that her father grabbed her by the neck, strangled her and threw her, according to the affidavit. She also told police her father hit her several times in the face and head.
The alleged assault continued outside her camper, where police say Michael Hosmer attempted to run his daughter over with his car. Jordan Hosmer told Beraldi she was saved by jumping behind a shower unit sitting outside the camper.
Beraldi met with Jordan Hosmer shortly after at a residence in Sharon, where he observed red marks on her lower neck and “strangulation symptoms” such as neck pain, a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and a raspy voice. Lumps on the backside of her head also likely were caused by blows, Beraldi wrote in the affidavit.
Later that night, Beraldi went to Michael Hosmer’s home, where Hosmer told him that he had been attacked by Jordan Hosmer, resulting in a scratch on his nose.
Michael Hosmer was then taken into custody without incident.
Hosmer is being held at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt., and has been ordered by Superior Court Judge Theresa DiMauro to have no contact with Jordan Hosmer. A trial date hasn’t been scheduled.
