Laconia, n.h.
It took a year, but the bill came due on Wednesday at Laconia Country Club.
Nate, who will be a junior on the Trinity College men’s golf team in the fall, grabbed a 2-up win over Phin, a junior-to-be at Hanover. As unlikely as it could have been to happen, the matchup occurred after Phin landed the 31st seed and Nate the 34th with identical scores through medal play on Tuesday, both making the 64-golfer knockout out of an initial field of 144 competitors.
If beating his younger brother wasn’t tough enough, Nate Choukas’ task gets more difficult this morning. He’ll take on 2011 state am champ Jim Cilley, of Ridgewood Country Club, in an 8:04 match in the round of 32. A win there would set up a second match this afternoon. Cilley eliminated the Country Club of New Hampshire’s Charlie McNeeley, 5 and 3, in their Wednesday match.
Nate MacDonald, who yielded state amateur champion honors to Cilley at Nashua Country Club a year after winning the 2010 title at Eastman, lived to see another day as well. The Hanover Country Club member was a 3-and-2 victor over Manchester’s Patrick McGinley, which set him up for a second-rounder with Windham’s James McKee today at 8:36 a.m.
Other notable first-round winners included defending N.H. Amateur champion Connor Greenleaf, Fall Mountain High School graduate Ryan Kohler, 2015 state am semifinalist Jamie Ferullo, former NHIAA high school standout Ryan Tombs and state am veteran Craig Steckowych.

Didehbani’s play at left back helped goalkeepers Davis Cole and Erik Spaulding earn the shutout, and his coast-to-coast run late in the first half helped set up Owen Johnstone’s opening tally.
