Woodsville, N.H. — Irving Davis Coon, a lifelong resident of Woodsville, died Thursday, July 7, 2016, at the age of 90. After a period of declining health, he was called to his eternal hunting grounds.

Irving was born in Milton, Vt. on March 25, 1926, the son of Leon and Marguerite (Morse) Coon. He was later raised, along with his brother Edwin, by his aunt and uncle, Avis and Chuck Burton, in Bath and Woodsville. Irving completed his education at Woodsville High School, and in March 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He completed boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. and later served with the 31st Battalion, 5th Marine Division. In February of 1945, as a member of the 5th Division, he was sent to fight in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.

Following his discharge from the Marine Corps in May 1946, he returned home to Woodsville and on Nov. 1, 1947, he married Pandora “Pam” Bolos. Irving worked for the Woodsville Water and Light Department for five years and the New England Telephone Company for 35 years as a lineman and a foreman.

He was a long time member of the Ross-Wood Post #20 American Legion of Woodsville and the Ammonoosuc Valley Fish and Game Club. He was also recognized as the longest living member of the Woodsville United Methodist Church. Irving was passionate about hunting and fishing. He spent countless hours in the woods each fall and it was such a loss for him when he had to give up hunting due to his health. In retirement, he and Pam enjoyed many rounds of golf together at the Bradford golf course.

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Pam, on February 13th, 2005. He was also predeceased by his three brothers; Leon Coon in July 1994, Edwin Burton in November 1995, and Russell Coon in September 1997.

He is survived by his three children, Charles I. Coon and wife Zooey, of Hartland, VT, William G. Coon and wife Beverly of Williamstown, VT and Lisa Russell and husband John of Lake Tapps WA, his companion Henrietta Powers of Bradford, VT and his 6 grandchildren, Hayden Coon (wife Anna), Logan Coon, Aurora Coon, Kestrel Coon, Eric Russell, and Andrew Russell.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be on Saturday, August 13th, at 11:00 at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH with Pastor Clint Brake of the Woodsville United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Woodsville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Haverhill Memorial VFW Post #5245, c/o Dale Pierson, 3 Beech St. Woodsville, NH 03785.
