White River Junction— Thanks to the Upper Valley Food Co-op’s Sew-Op group, two jewel-colored quilts will soon adorn the walls of the Outpatient Surgery Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Quite a few members of the community sewing and fiber crafts organization have worked or currently work in the medical field, said Jennifer Sarne, the Co-op’s education and outreach assistant. They wanted patients to have “something nice to look at after surgery.”

Groups members, including Sarne, met regularly for the past several months to chip away at the quilts, designed to provide a pop of color. Last month, they put the finishing touches on their creation — a carpenter star pattern and a landscape depicting a typical Upper Valley scene, complete with a little white church.

The Sew-op offers classes and open hours, during which anyone with basic sewing experience can stop by and work on a project, Sarne said. Members also work on service projects, which have included handmade items for local moms.
