Ascutney — The Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District has been awarded a solid waste implementation program grant for $21,215 from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.

The money will be used to advertise six household hazardous waste collections throughout the district and pay for about half of the disposal costs for the materials collected. Three of the events were held in May, and the rest will be held in September.

The goal of the project is to divert as much household hazardous waste as possible from the landfill and engage as many district residents as possible in the diversion process, the solid waste management district said in a news release.

The union municipal district provides solid waste management authority, services and planning to its member towns, which include Andover, Athens, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Plymouth, Reading, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield, West Windsor and Windsor.
