Orford, N.H.— Herbert A. Knapp, M.D., died at home with his wife at his side on Monday, June 13, 2016, after a long and fruitful life of 91 years. He was born on May 20, 1925 in New York City, N.Y., to Yetta and Victor Knapp. His family moved to Asbury Park, N.J. where he attended Bond Street School and graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1943. He went on to Colgate University until he was drafted by a group of his “friends and neighbors” into the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Third Division Infantry as part of a heavily armed group drawing fire. After the war, he studied at Nottingham University, finishing out his Army term. He then returned to finish pre-med and chemistry studies at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.

After completing his studies at Colgate, he went on to the New York University School of Medicine in 1951. During this time, he spent as much time as possible with the New York City Medical Examiner’s office to increase his knowledge. He always had a very deep and driving desire to learn and increase his ability in the practice of medicine. After graduating, he completed his internship at Monmouth Memorial Hospital in New Jersey and also attained a degree of Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1952. Additionally, he became a special investigator for the Monmouth County Medical Examiner’s office and served as Assistant Medical Examiner later in the 1950’s. He had many suspicious deaths investigated with over a 75% of these prosecuted.

Herbert opened a private practice in Bradley Beach, N.J. and with his wife, Lenore, raised two children, Marianne Janet and Joanne. He rarely missed a week returning to New York University for grand rounds and maintaining contact with the Medical Examiner’s office. Herbert had a love of jazz and blues as well as movies. He remembered names of characters in the movies, who sang what song and when it was written. He also had a passion for cars, owning classics such as a Rolls Royce, Bentley, Peugeot and several MGs.

On June 20, 1966, he met his future wife Faith, while paying an emergency house call on her father. On March 15, 1970, they married and went on to revel in a wonderful, fulfilling marriage for more than 46 years. They had one daughter, Deborah Hillary.

He had a full life of traveling, meeting people and maintaining friendships at home and abroad. Herbert and Faith continued their interest in cars, acquiring a prototype Jensen, 2CV Renault, and Saab Sonnett among others. They also attended Jim Russell’s Race Drivers School in England. They became wine aficionados, traveling extensively throughout France and Italy — again making lasting friendships in the pursuit of their hobby. They loved skiing, with Vermont being a favorite destination. They skied in Colorado and Utah as well as France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria. They bought property, designed and starting building their house in Norwich, Vermont.

In 2003, they found an idyllic piece of property in Orford and went on to design and build their current house. He loved the community of Orford and spent many hours talking and being involved in the political community. Here they both became active in presidential and local campaigns. It was a religion with Herbert to drive down to Umpleby’s Bakery in Hanover every day for his coffee, croissant, and conversation where he again made more friends and acquaintances. His love of old movies and music was shared by Bob of Stella’s. The two friends spent time watching old films, exchanging jokes and discussing the best old movies and music.

Faith had a 90+1 birthday party for him on May 21 at home where he had a wonderful time with his friends, disclosing as he grinned(??) that he had a little too much to drink and was a bit hung over on Sunday. He said this was his last party; his gradual decline ended in his death less than a month later.

He is survived by his wife, Faith; two children, Marianne of Newark, Del., and Joanne, of Darien, Conn.; and their grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter with Faith, Deborah Hillary, on June 21, 1993. There will be a celebration of Herbert’s life at his home at 358 Archertown Road, Orford on July 10, 2016, from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. for friends and family. Condolences may be expressed to his family. In lieu of flowers in his memory may be sent to your local food shelf, the Orford Fire Department, PO Box 56, Orford NH or Upper Valley Ambulance.
