West Lebanon, N.H. — William A. Scanlon was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Nescopec, Pa., the son of Joseph Scanlon and May V. Anderson. He died at the age of 84 in Vermont on Monday, June 20, 2016, in his adopted home in the green hills of New England. He will be remembered for the joy he brought to many who stayed at the Upper Valley Hostel through the beauty of the garden he created there: clematis and roses were his special pride.

Bill served in the U.S. Air Force as a meteorologist, and later worked for the U.S. Weather Bureau in the Pacific. He was one of the original owners and co-founders of the jazz bar, the “Albatross”, in Berkeley, Calif. It exists until this day.

He was predeceased by his sister, Joan (Colgan) and leaves his loving sisters, Katherine Scanlon-Pon (Bob) and Ann Wilson; nieces, Susan Colgan-Graham and Nicole Lodato; and great-nieces and nephew.

The family is grateful for the care of the entire staff at the Brookside Nursing Home, and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, both in White River Jct., Vt. Memorial service will be at a later date. At the family’s request they ask that all donations be made to the Upper Valley Hostel.

Ricker Funeral Homes & Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
