Canaan, N.H. — Ethel Hazelton passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016, after a brief illness. She was 80.

She was born on July 26, 1935, in Canaan to Elwin and Pauline (Eastman) Black. She attended Canaan school and worked locally until she began a career as a seamstress at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, N.H., retiring after 39 years. She then worked part-time as a seamstress at Kleen Laundry.

Ethel married Walter Hazelton, Jr. on Dec. 2, 1966. They enjoyed many years together, camping, snowmobiling, raising animals and gardening. He predeceased her on April 4, 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Valia, of Lebanon; sons, Daniel Hazelton (Donna) of Orange and Walter F. Hazelton (Debbie) of Grafton; and a brother, John Black (Donna) of Hebron. She leaves four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

In her later years she enjoyed watching her stories on television, visiting Mohegan Sun, trying her luck at scratch tickets, and spending time with family and friends. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her wonderful sense of humor and compassion.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care during her stay.

Per her wishes there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the Canaan Street Cemetery at the convenience of the family. An online guest book is available to leave a message of condolence for Ethel’s family by visiting www.rickerfuneralhome.com.
