Taking a look back at Upper Valley collegiate competitors and their spring sports seasons:
Sophomore outfielder Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris (Norwich/Hanover) started one of the six games he played for Wesleyan and hit .167 before leaving the team. โฆ Holy Cross (30-27) reached the Patriot League finals with junior pitcher Joe Cravero (Hanover) starting once during the 26 games in which he appeared. During 50 innings, he had a 3.24 ERA, a 6-3 record, 48 strikeouts and 20 walks. โฆ Senior utility player Jake Broom (New London/Kearsarge) appeared in 37 games and batted .257 for Plymouth State, which was 20-22. โฆ Colby-Sawyer (13-23) suffered its 11th consecutive losing season, but junior first baseman Justin Devoid (Quechee/Hartford) started all 19 games in which he played, batting a team-high .411. Sophomore second baseman Doug Avellino (Woodstock) started all 32 games in which he played and hit .333. โฆ Ross Caswell (Randolph) was a sophomore catcher at Nichols (Mass.) College (24-18), starting all 40 games in which he played and batting .343 with 32 RBIs. โฆ Senior pitcher Scott Bigelow (Randolph) made 11 relief appearances and pitched 10 innings with a 6.30 ERA for Fisher (Mass.) College, an NAIA school which went 18-27. โฆ Sophomore pitcher Jack Weinberger (Sunapee) started five of the six times he played for Springfield (Mass.) College, going 0-3 with an 11.50 ERA. The Pride was 12-21-1. โฆ Senior utility player Clint Goodwin (Lebanon) played in 15 games for Daniel Webster (10-22). โฆ Jordan Levin (Thetford) played in one game for Kenyon (Ohio) College (21-17) as a freshman infielder.
Claire Callahan (Norwich/Hanover) rowed in the varsity eight for Hamilton (N.Y.) College, which finished fourth (7:32.995) in the petite final at the National Invitational Menโs and Womenโs Rowing Championships in Worcester, Mass. โฆ The Skidmore (N.Y.) College womenโs team reached the D-Level final at the same meet. Senior Sukie Emerson (Norwich/Hanover) was part of that effort. โฆ Sophomore Jeremiah Leonard (Lyme Center/Hanover) and senior Matthew Ryder (Lebanon) were on the roster at Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute. Ryder was part of the third varsity eight which finished sixth in the grand final at the New England championships. โฆ Freshman Ben Lynch (Lyme/Hanover) and sophomore Chris Steidl (Hanover) competed for Wesleyanโs varsity eight, sitting in the third and fourth seats. The Cardinals were fourth at the New England championships and at the U.S. Rowing National Invitational Regatta. โฆ Colby junior Sophie Bartels (Hanover) was part of the Mulesโ varsity eight boat that placed eighth overall after taking second in the petite final (7:13.973) at the New England championships. It was Colbyโs best finish since 2007.
Junior midfielder Andrew Jarrett (KUA) saw action in 21 games for St. Lawrence (18-3), scoring 20 goals and adding 14 assists. The Saints advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament semifinals. โฆ Castleton featured a pair of local defenders in sophomore Ed Doton (Barnard/Woodstock) and freshman Will Gault (Woodstock). They helped the Spartans go 11-7 and reach the North Atlantic Conference title game. Doton started nine of the 17 games in which he appeared, and Gault started five of 12. โฆ Lyndon State (7-8) earned the first postseason victory in program history with a triumph in the NAC semifinals. Senior midfielder Colin Young (Sharon/Sharon Academy) played in every game and started all but one of them, posting six goals and four assists. Freshman attackman Justin Royce (Hartford) played in six games and had a goal for a program that entered the season having won 20 of its previous 100 games. โฆ Sophomore goaltender Rick Kronenwett (KUA) played 39 minutes over five games for Nazareth (N.Y.) College (12-6). โฆ Kenny Speak (KUA) was a freshman attackman at Endicott (Mass.) College, for which he appeared in 16 games and had five goals and three assists. The Gulls were 9-9. โฆ Skidmore was 5-11 with freshman attackman Conor Austin (Norwich/Hanover) appearing in 13 games and producing two goals. Freshman attackman Eric Megnia (KUA) had 12 goals and 19 assists while starting every game. โฆ Sophomore defenseman Chris Anderson (KUA) started 13 of the 14 games he played for Beloit (Wisc.) College (5-10). He had two goals and an assist. โฆ Nichols (5-11) featured senior midfielder Darby Geno (White River Junction/Hartford) and junior midfielder Paul Tessier (KUA). Geno started every game and Tessier played in each contest, posting 11 goals and six assists. โฆ Senior Max Abendroth (Sunapee/KUA) helped Springfield go 12-8. He played in 16 games and had three goals. โฆ Bard (4-11) was captained by senior defenseman Sam Funnell (Canaan/Hanover) who started every game and had two assists. โฆ Sophomore midfielder Peter Bensen (Norwich/Hanover) appeared in five games during Bowdoinโs 12-5 campaign. โฆ Christian Wolter (Norwich/Hanover) was a junior midfielder for Michigan (3-10) and saw action in 12 games. โฆ Norwich was 9-9 with junior midfielder Joe Wood (White River Junction/Hartford) playing in 17 games and producing four goals and three assists. โฆ Junior attackman Peter Allen (Kearsarge) had 14 goals and nine assists while starting five of the 15 contests he played for Plymouth State (6-10). โฆ Rensselaer (13-5) reached the NCAA Division III tournament with sophomore midfielder Oliver Kaija (Woodstock) starting 11 of the 17 games in which he played and scoring twice. He won 143 of 284 faceoffs. โฆ Wesleyan was 10-5 with sophomore midfielder Andrew Huizenga (Norwich/Hanover) playing in two games. โฆ Curry (Mass.) College was 10-7 with sophomore defenseman Jack Boillotat (Hanover) starting every game. โฆ Williams (10-7) used sophomore goaltender Chris Washington (Hanover) for six minutes of action. โฆ Green Mountain was 2-11 with a 16-man roster, one of its members being freshman attackman Oliver Vicar (Woodstock). He had two goals and eight assists and started 11 of the 12 games in which he competed.
Sophomore attacker Storm Sideleau (KUA) started 13 times in 15 appearances for Vassar (6-9) and had 37 goals and four assists, good for third on the team in scoring. โฆ Freshman defender Joanna Schafer (Meriden/KUA) appeared in three games for Bates (12-6). โฆ Kells Casey (KUA) started all 13 games she played for Utica (N.Y.) College and posted a 10.16 GAA and a .393 save percentage for the Pioneers (9-7). โฆ Sophomore attacker Ashley Fogg (White River Junction/Hartford), freshman position mate Brittney Malik (Randolph) and sophomore defender Katie Abdel-Fatah (Randolph) experienced a 1-10 season at Johnson State. Fogg started every game and had two assists, Malik started eight of the nine contests in which she appeared and had five goals and five assists and Abdel-Fatah started every game and had a goal. โฆ Senior midfielder Steph Bonewald (New London) was the second-leading scorer for St. Michaelโs (3-13) for the second consecutive season. She started every game and had 29 goals and an assist. Freshman midfielder Amanda Dombrowski (Hartford) started two of the seven games in which she played. โฆ Colby (12-4) featured junior defender Georgia Lubrano (Hanover) and junior midfielder Gemma Bready (Kearsarge). The former started 13 of the 15 games in which she played and the latter four of the 14 contests in which she appeared, posting seven goals and two assists. โฆ Castleton (12-6) won the NAC and reached the NCAA Division III playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. Freshman midfielder Clancy Ferrand (Woodstock) played in seven games and had two goals. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Braman (Chelsea) started 12 of the 16 games in which she played and had five goals and four assists. Senior attacker Brianna McKay (Randolph) had 81 goals and 17 assists while starting 16 of the 18 contests in which she competed. โฆ Middlebury (22-1) won its sixth NCAA Division III championship with sophomore midfielder Evie Keating (Hanover) playing in every game and starting all but two. The Panthers reached the national semifinals last spring. โฆ Georgetown (6-11) had sophomore midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover) on the field for 17 games. She produced four goals and five assists. โฆ Esme Cole (White River Junction/Hartford) played in six games and had three goals for Kenyon (Ohio) College, for which she was a freshman midfielder. โฆ Williams went 5-11 and sophomore midfielder Kate Pattison (Hanover) started every game and had a goal. โฆ Senior midfielder Martha Howe (Sunapee) and freshman defender Suzie Moses (Strafford/Sharon Academy) played for Green Mountain (5-9). Howe started every game and had 16 goals and two assists. Moses appeared in one contest. โฆ Junior attacker Hannah Lyons (Norwich/Hanover) helped Colorado College finish 14-3 and win an NCAA Division III tournament game. She played in 13 contests and had seven goals and an assist. โฆ Sophomore midfielder Annie Arthur (Woodstock) started eight of the 17 games she played for Babson (Mass.) College and had 13 goals and seven assists as the Beavers gnawed their way to a 13-4 record. โฆ Sierra Luce (Hartford), was a senior attacker for Regis (Mass.) College, which was 12-7, won its fourth consecutive New England Collegiate Conference title and reached NCAA Division III tournament play for the second consecutive year. She started each of the 10 games in which she appeared and had seven goals and three assists. โฆ University of New England freshman defender Kyra Taylor (Plainfield/Lebanon) started all 18 games and had a goal for the Norโeasters (11-7).
Junior catcher Chrissy Drake (Lebanon) started every Nichols game for a third consecutive season and batted .330 with 19 RBIs for the Bison (14-21). โฆ Kaitlynn Woodward (White River Junction/Hartford) was a freshman pitcher for Johnson State (7-19). She played in 24 games, batting .265 and pitching eight times. She made three starts and was 0-4 in 26 innings with a 9.57 ERA. โฆ Norwich was 17-19 with senior outfielder Taylor Morris (Haverhill/Woodsville) and freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson (Randolph) on the roster. Morris hit .391 in 36 games, and Johnson started 20 of the 22 times she appeared in the circle. She was 9-10 with a 3.41 ERA. โฆ Junior outfielder Mindy Carl (Newport) appeared in 22 games and batted .250 for Lyndon State (2-26). โฆ Junior catcher Emma Blaiklock (Woodstock) appeared in five games for Castleton State (21-13).
Graduate student Ethan Chapman (Post Mills/Thetford) was third in the decathlon and his Southern Connecticut squad was third out of 38 teams at the New England Outdoor all-division championships. Chapman was second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.43), discus (36.24 meters) and javelin (49.49) and tied for first in the pole vault at 4.20 meters. He was sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:48.89). Cole Chapman (Post Mills/Thetford), Ethanโs brother and an SCU freshman, was third in the decathlon at the Northeast 10 Conference championships. โฆ Sophomore high jumper Kevin Pomer (Grantham/Lebanon) placed second in the event (1.68 meters) for Ithaca (N.Y.) College during a four-way meet in late April. โฆ Franklin Pierce sophomore Martin Gradijan (Lebanon) posted personal bests in three events this spring. They were the 3,000 meters (9:12.78), the 10,000 meters (34:00.59) and the 3,000 steeplechase (9:54.05). The Ravens were fourth out of 11 teams at the Northeast 10 Conference championshipsโฆ Richard Bradley (Lyme) was a junior javelin thrower at Harvard who produced a javelin personal best with a throw of 58.98 meters. The Crimson was sixth at the Ivy Championships. โฆ Castleton freshman Clayton Bailey (North Hartland/Hartford) threw the javelin 44.23 meters and the shot 9.63 meters this spring. Classmate Jackson Dwyer (Quechee/Hartford) threw the shot 11.87 meters, threw the javelin 42.72 meters, slung the hammer 35.73 meters and sent the discus 38.11 meters. Another Spartans freshman, Tayler Larmie (Wilder/Hartford) competed in the shot put (12.99), discus (35.12), hammer (37.96) and javelin (39.01). Castleton was second out of six teams at the NAC championships. Larmie was first in the hammer, second in the shot put and third in the discus that day. Jackson was second in the discus and Bailey was third in the javelin. โฆ Freshman Sawyer Levy (Bethel/Sharon Academy) competed in four events for Green Mountain. He threw the shot 9.88 meters, the discus 30.00, the hammer 23.94 and the javelin 42.06. The Eagles were sixth out of seven teams at the NAC championships. โฆ New Hampshire senior Dylan Pelletier (Orford/Rivendell) ran the 100 meters in 11.44 seconds and the 200 in 23.17 this spring.
Johnson State finished seventh at the NAC meet. Freshman Lily Denmeade (Quechee/Woodstock) was ninth in the 400 (1:13.95). Freshman Larissa Stride (Tunbridge/South Royalton) was 11th in the 100 (15.43) and was part of a fifth-place 4×100 team. She also threw the javelin 26 meters earlier in the spring. โฆ Dartmouth junior Moriah Morton (Lebanon) placed ninth in the javelin at the Ivy Leagueโs outdoor championships with a throw of 38.13 meters. Dartmouth finished fifth in the eight-team competition. Morton threw 41.97 earlier in the season. โฆ The Wheaton (Mass.) College womenโs team sent representatives to the NCAA Division III national meet for the 20th consecutive year, including junior Kelly Ludew (Lebanon). She was part of the Lyonsโ 4×100 meter relay team, which finished 15th out of 16 quartets in 47.92, improving on last yearโs showing of 48.63 at the same event. Ludew also posted a personal best in the 100 meters at 13.29 earlier in the spring. โฆ Vermont sophomore Margaret Gish (Sharon/Sharon Academy) ran a personal best in the 10,000 meters (40:18.55) at the America East Conference meet. UVM was fifth out of nine teams at the event. โฆ Brown junior Safiya Walker (Hanover) delivered a personal best in the 400 hurdles (1:07.55) during her schoolโs Springtime Open meet. โฆ Bates junior Elyse Rubchinuk (Newport) competed at the ECAC Division III championships and placed 24th out of 25 competitors in the javelin (32.76 meters). She threw 36.59 to place fifth out of 14 competitors. Bates finished fourth out of 11 teams. โฆ Crista Hargbol (Sunapee) is a junior sprinter at UNH who ran 1:07.60 in the 400 hurdles and finished 15th in the preliminaries at the America East meet. The Wildcats finished second out of nine teams. โฆ Kayla Gould (Orford/Thetford Academy), a Plymouth State freshman pole vaulter, cleared 2.3 meters at the New England Alliance championships. She was 13th out of 14 competitors and the Panthers were 11th out of 12 teams. โฆ Taylor Downs (West Lebanon/Lebanon) a sophomore at Southern Maine, ran 15.95 seconds in the 100 meters and 36.06 in the 200. โฆ Williams freshman Kerry Swarz (Woodstock) posted a 13.49 time in the 100 meters for the Ephs.
Senior tennis player Austin Mansell (West Lebanon/Lebanon) earned Empire 8 Conference honorable mention recognition for Elmira (N.Y.) College. He was 12-6 in singles play, including a 9-3 mark at the No. 3 position. Mansell was 9-9 in doubles action, seven of those triumphs occurring at the No. 2 slot. He finished his career with a combined 64 victories, second on the Soaring Eagles list. โฆ St. Lawrence freshman Carly Jefferson (Sunapee/KUA) went 6-6 in singles play, winning five of her last six matches. She was slotted mostly at No. 6. In doubles. Jefferson was 3-2 at the No. 3 position. The Saints were 14-7 and reached the Liberty League championship. โฆ Zach Temple (Hartland/Hartford) is a junior golfer at Castleton who tied for fourth place during the Spartansโ final competition of the spring with a seven over par 79. Castleton finished sixth out of eight teams. โฆ Trinity (Conn.) College sophomore Nate Choukas (Hanover) helped the Bantams tie for second at the four-team NESCAC Golf Championships. He was sixth among 20 individual competitors after placing ninth as a freshman.
