Englewood, Colo. — Super Bowl MVP Von Miller’s camp has rejected a contract proposal that would have made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of negotiations, said Miller’s representatives rejected a six-year, $114.5 million offer that included $39.8 million in guarantees in the first two years.

Joby Branion, who represents Miller, didn’t immediately return a message left by The AP seeking comment on the rejected offer, which was first reported by ESPN.

Although the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement gives teams until July 15 to work out long-term contract extensions with franchised players, Broncos general manager John Elway imposed a Tuesday night cutoff because he wanted Miller to attend this week’s mandatory minicamp and not miss the entire offseason program.

Elway could revisit Miller’s contract, but he’s turning his attention toward negotiations with wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and inside linebacker Brandon Marshall.

Miller guided the Broncos to a 24-10 win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50 with two sack-strips of NFL MVP Cam Newton that led to both of Denver’s touchdowns. That came after he collected 2½ sacks and intercepted Tom Brady in the AFC championship game.

Rams Waive Gunshot Victim

Oxnard, Calif.— Although the Los Angeles Rams have waived Stedman Bailey, they intend to keep the receiver around the team this season while he continues to recover from his gunshot wounds.

Bailey is headed to the Rams’ reserve non-football injury list after clearing waivers, coach Jeff Fisher said Wednesday.

Bailey was shot last November while sitting in a car in Miami with his cousin and two children. He survived and underwent numerous medical procedures, but hasn’t been cleared to resume a football career.

While he continues to heal, the Rams intend to introduce Bailey to other aspects of football. Bailey has been with the Rams in their new offseason home during organized team activities, and he will continue to work with their coaching staff.

Bears Lineman Retires

Lake Forest, Ill. — Chicago Bears offensive lineman Manny Ramirez is retiring.

The Bears placed Ramirez on the reserve/retired list on Wednesday.

He signed with Chicago in March after 83 games with 65 starts over eight seasons with the Detroit Lions (2007-09, 2015) and the Denver Broncos (2011-14).

Horse Racing Preakness Winner 9-5 Favorite in Belmont

New York — The post position worked out well for Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, leaving him hopeful for a clear path to sweep to victory aboard Exaggerator in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

Exaggerator, the Preakness winner, drew an outside No. 11 post in a 13-horse field on Wednesday and was made the 9-5 morning-line favorite for the final leg of the Triple Crown, a 1½-mile lap around cavernous Belmont Park.

“It’s a wonderful, wonderful position,” Desormeaux said. “I can’t see any horse that would cross over on him. I’d like to establish position preferably without him getting a grain of sand in his face.”

In the Preakness, Exaggerator stormed into the lead at the head of stretch and splashed his way to a 3 ½-length win, handing Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist the first loss of his career.

With no Triple Crown on the line and Nyquist sitting out the Belmont after recently recovering from a fever, there’s little buzz surrounding the race.

NBA Basketball Pelicans Hire Ex-Cavs, Hawks GM

Metairie, La. — New Orleans Pelicans general manager Dell Demps said he’s hired former NBA player and front office executive Danny Ferry as a special adviser.

Demps said Ferry’s “experience, insight and achievements will be a welcomed addition.”

Ferry’s most recent NBA job was with Atlanta, where he was general manager from 2012-15. Before that, he spent a couple seasons in San Antonio’s front office. From 2005 to 2010, Ferry was Cleveland’s GM, building a team around LeBron James that reached the 2007 NBA finals.
