Windsor — The Windsor High softball team’s bid to hit the win column for the first time was denied by Bellows Falls on Thursday, as the Terriers roughed up three Windsor pitchers producing an 11-6 win in a Marble Valley League game.

It’s been a long year for the Yellowjackets, who will take an 0-15 mark into tonight’s finale at Springfield. The best chance to pick up a win perhaps came earlier in the season, when the Jacks dropped a 5-4 decision to Stevens.

“That game still haunts me,” said Windsor’s Rebecca Rumrill, who has pretty much rolled with the punches during the winless season.

“I knew it was going to be a tough year before the season began,” she said. “We have a lot of freshmen. Still, playing softball is fun and I love my teammates.”

Windsor went into Thursday’s game with a chance for a win as Bellows Falls (4-10) has also been struggling. The Terriers had been averaging seven errors a game, but made only two Thursday.

“Heck, when we beat Windsor the first time (23-8), we made nine errors, seven in the first three innings,” BF coach Pete Fry said.

What sparked Bellows Falls was not only the defense, but pitcher Murphy Hicks, who while giving up 11 hits, not only did not walk a batter, she had no three ball counts and just four two-ball counts. She threw just 71 pitches, 61 for strikes.

Russ Hodgkins, the Terriers assistant coach who keeps track of the statistics, said that Hicks, who has pitched complete games in 13 of the Terriers’ contests, has walked just 14 or 15 batters all season.

In the first inning she did not throw a ball out of the strike zone and had just one-ball counts in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings.

While Hicks was throwing strikes, the Windsor pitchers walked nine, which Windsor coach Phil Hathorn knows won’t get it done.

“We just don’t get enough outs from the mound,” Hathorn said. “We also make mistakes in the field that hurt. We don’t always know what to do.”

While Windsor out-hit the Terriers 11-7, the Jacks couldn’t bunch their hits and get a big inning, scoring one run in the first and third innings and two in fifth and seventh innings.

Bellows Falls led from start to finish. Still, Windsor trailed just 4-2 after four innings. But the Terriers’ first three batters walked in the fifth inning and all came around to score. BF then put a lock on the game with four runs in the sixth.

Carah Rugg, Emily Anderson and Rumrill all took a turn in the circle for Windsor. Rumrill had the most success as she got the final two out in the sixth and allowed just one baserunner in the seventh.

Offensively, Brooke McKeen, Anderson and Rumrill each had two hits for Windsor.
