Newport — And to think all it may have taken was some good, loud music.

Enjoying its senior day to the fullest, the Newport High baseball team won its third straight game to keep its NHIAA Division III state tournament hopes alive in a 10-4 win over Pelham at Bates Field on Friday. Dawson Campbell, one of four seniors on first-year coach Jon Hamel’s roster, threw a complete game with eight strikeouts and joined fellow seniors C.J. Lawrence, Noah Wade and Tyler Maheu in making key offensive contributions.

Hamel opened up the top of the Newport dugout to employ a public-address system for pregame recognition. It became a jukebox the rest of the game, with the Tigers (4-9) rockin’ and rollin’ their way to another victory.

“If they were allowed to pay with headphones on, they’d be a whole other team,” Hamel remarked.

Campbell, Lawrence and Maheu all had multiple-hit games for Newport. Wade provided a couple of runs as well for the Tigers, who swept a doubleheader from Hinsdale on Monday.

The top 20 teams make the D-III tournament. Seemingly out of contention a week ago, Newport is now 22nd with three games to play, a game behind 20th-place Hopkinton, which took a 5-8 mark into a game with White Mountains on Friday.

“We got back to having fun and playing loose,” Hamel said. “Winning solves a lot of things.”

Newport will look to continue its late-season surge at Mascoma on Monday.
