Indianapolis — The Indiana Pacers have promoted assistant Nate McMillan to head coach, ending the search for Frank Vogel’s replacement after less than two weeks.

McMillan spent 12 seasons as the head coach in Seattle and Portland, going 478-452 in the regular season and 14-20 in the playoffs.

He was hired by Vogel in 2013 and spent the past three seasons with the Pacers, where he developed relationships with the players and president of basketball operations Larry Bird.

McMillan already had a bond with Pacers general manager Kevin Pritchard from their days in Portland.

Bird announced May 5 that Vogel would not be retained after his contract expired and that he believed the Pacers needed to hear a different voice in the locker room.

Blazers’ Stott Gets Extension

Portland, Ore. — A person with knowledge of the negotiations says Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts has agreed to a three-year contract extension.

Stotts coached the young Trail Blazers to the second round of the playoffs this year.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the deal.

The Blazers hold a team option on Stotts’ current contract for the coming season. The extension, first reported by Yahoo Sports, goes into effect following the season and runs through 2020.

Wolves Send Towns to Lottery

Minneapolis — The Minnesota Timberwolves will send Karl-Anthony Towns as their representative to the NBA draft lottery, hoping for the same fortune that brought them the NBA Rookie of the Year.

The Wolves took Towns with the first pick in 2015 after winning the lottery last spring. This time, they’ll have 88 pingpong balls in the hopper out of 1,000 for an 8.8 percent chance of landing the top spot again. The draw will take place tonight in New York.

Towns will wear one of the late Flip Saunders’ wedding rings around his neck as a good-luck charm at the suggestion of Saunders’ son, Ryan, who wears it around his neck each day.

Saunders, the former coach and executive of the Wolves, died last October after a battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Raptors center Valanciunas out for Game 1 against Cavaliers

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Toronto Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas will not play in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers because of an injured right ankle.

Coach Dwane Casey said Monday that Valanciunas is receiving treatment on the ankle he injured in Game 3 of the second-round against Miami. Casey didn’t provide a timetable for the center’s return but said “it’s going to be very difficult” for Valanciunas to play Game 2.

Casey would not rule out the 7-footer for the entire series.

The loss of Valanciunas is a major blow to Toronto, making its first appearance in the East finals. He’s averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds in 10 games during this postseason and shooting 55 percent from the field.

The Raptors managed to get past the Heat without the Valanciunas because of the strong play by backup Bismack Biyomobo.
