The Internet service provider ECFiber on Wednesday announced plans to provide universal fiber-optic coverage in 2017 to the towns of Barnard, Thetford, Strafford, West Windsor, Pomfret and Pittsfield.

Nearly all households and businesses in the six towns, whose combined population is about 7,000, will receive high-speed Internet through a planned 250 extra miles in cable, the community-owned organization said in a news release.

ECFiber said it had picked those six communities after a pre-subscription campaign indicated that demand for service was highest there.

The Internet provider noted, however, that it will take longer to reach some areas on the outskirts of towns by fiber-optic cable. ECFiber relies on existing utility poles to provide service, the release said, and some outlying road segments use power from lines that begin in other towns.
