East Thetford
The Thetford Volunteer Fire Department responded to the parking lot of Wing’s Market along Route 5 around 2:35 p.m. after one truck’s hydraulic hose blew, sending hydraulic fluid onto the ground during a pouring rain.
“We needed to control that spill and the runoff, keeping it from going into the culvert and nearby brook, and we were able to do that,” Deputy Fire Chief Mariah Whitcomb said.
A “secondary” site developed after the truck was moved across the street to the parking lot of Isabell’s Cafe, Whitcomb said, but that also was contained.
Meanwhile, a second Casella truck had problems with its hydraulic hose and spilled fluid in the parking lot of nearby Long Wind Farm, but that spill also was contained, said Whitcomb, who called the incidents a “fluke.”
Clean Harbors was called in to vacuum up the pooled fluids, and the Hanover and Hartford fire departments helped with supplies for dealing with hazardous materials.

More than $750,000 has been raised toward the initial $1.5 million part of the capital campaign for the school, which serves grades seven through 12.
It was helped by a $300,000 matching pledge from the Hanover-based Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation. The campaign will be used to expand financial aid offerings, create a trail system on school property, and raise a barn for outdoor education and storage of athletic equipment, among other purposes, TSA said in a news release.
The second phase of the capital campaign, to total $3.5 million, would be used to improve science labs; build a kitchen for student meals; create studio space for large-scale constructions, science and engineering projects and theater sets; and improve energy efficiency.
