“It was really good for them, the kids needed to prove to themselves that they could do this. It would have been easy to go into the tank (in the seventh inning) but they decided they were going to win this game today,” Mascoma coach Guy Serviss said.
Ty Warner started the rally in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single. Micah McCullough followed with a single and the runners advanced to second and third on a ground out. Ethan Brueckner followed with an RBI single to bring the Royals within one and still with only one out, trailing 4-3 at that point.
After an intentional walk to Wyatt Wheeler to load the bases, Oscar Brueckner knotted the score at 4-4 with an RBI sacrifice fly. Tyler Findley followed another intentional free pass with a game-winning RBI single to set off a the celebration for the hometown Royals.
Pitcher Oscar Brueckner went the distance for Mascoma, striking out two while allowing just one earned run on five hits and two walks. Brueckner struck out four in the first inning alone; one of the fanned batters reached base when the ball got past the catcher. The Bears finished with two unearned runs in the first inning to stake to early lead.
Mascoma pushed across single runs in the second (on an RBI double by Mark Olsen) and the fifth (on an RBI single by Anthony Sperry). The win lifts the Royals to 2-4, already double the win totals of last season’s 1-15 team.
Mascoma is off for the rest of this week and will start a stretch of six games in nine days when they host Winnisquam on Monday.
Lebanon
“We got out of a couple jams with some solid defence and turned a couple good double plays,” Lebanon coach Doug Ashey said. “Overall we were rock solid defensively, threw a good number of strikes and hit the baseball well. It’s a very good effort by the players today, hopefully we’re heading in the right direction here.”
Caleb Broughton had a pair of triples, drove in two and scored three runs to lead the 14-hit Lebanon attack. Nate Gariepy was 3-for-4 with an RBI and also scored three runs. Hunter Marsh had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs. Matt Sullivan was 3-for-4 and was the fourth Raider to scored three runs. Andrew Hadlock had a double, a single and drove in two.
Lebanon (1-4) hits the road this week as they visit Plymouth on Wednesday and Goffstown on Thursday.
Bradford, Vt.
Daigle allowed four hits walked two while striking out four. Stimson had two doubles, two RBI and provided a defensive highlight when he threw out a runner at home from left field in the second inning.
Lincoln Ilsley and Eddie White each added three hits. Chris Underhill had two hits. The Olympians (2-1) visit Williamstown on Thursday.
Rochester, Vt.
Casey Kingsbury tossed a complete game with 107 pitches, allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out three and walking one.
Kingsbury was one of three Whitchester players with at least two RBIs, joining Zac Gillette and Ben Harvey (3).
Colby Washburn (double), Troy Walker (double) and Matt Townsend all had a pair of hits for the Mountaineers.
Whitcomb-Rochester (2-5) plays at South Royalton on Thursday in a rematch of the Royals’ win in their season opener.
Woodsville
Down 10-8 entering the bottom of the seventh, Cooper Davidson led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball before a double by Seanon May made it 10-9.
May went to third on a passed ball and Jordan Clark walked and stole second to set up Thornton’s game winning hit.
“It was a really exciting game,” Woodsville coach Brent Cox said. “We actually came back to tie it four times before we won it.”
May finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs, Thornton finished 3-for-5 and Davidson, a recent junior varsity call-up, went 2-for-4 in his first varsity game. Davidson, a sophomore, started at first base and moved to third halfway through the game.
Woodsville visits Lisbon on Wednesday.
North Sutton, n.h.
Zach O’Brien (triple, three RBIs), Brendan Bean (double, RBI, run), and Drew Grenier (RBI) all had two hits for the Cards.
Henry Bourque hit a two-run double in the third innings, breaking a 2-2 tie.
O’Brien went the distance on the mound, giving up four hits with seven strikeouts. He walked nine, but pitched out of several jams.
Kearsarge left 13 men on base.
Stevens hosts Monadnock on Wednesday.
Brandon, Vt.
Balch struck out eight and walked just one.
“He was spotting his fastball and keeping his breaking ball down in the zone. He kept them off balance and had a little extra pop on the fastball, it looked like,” Windsor coach Jamie Richardson said.
The Jacks scored in the sixth when Connor Gould reached base on an error and then stole second. Nick Kapuscinski then hit a ground ball that got past the third baseman for an error to score Gould.
The Otters were threatening for the tying run as they had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
An ensuing suicide squeeze attempt was popped up; Balch made a diving catch and then fired to third for a game-winning double play.
Windsor (2-2) hosts Woodstock today.
Newport
Fall Mountain pitched Kendall Heath struck out 13 in a dominant effort.
Newport counterpart Dylan McNamara also pitched a complete game and did the most damage against Heath at the plate with two hits.
“The top of the order did a good job putting the ball in play. We played pretty good defense. I’m really proud of the guys, we never gave up. It was a lot closer game than the score indicated. It’s a good game to build on some things,” Newport coach Jonathan Hamel said.
The Tigers (0-2) visit Gilford on Thursday.
Bradford, Vt.
Bourgeois batted 3-for-4 with a home run, two triples and seven RBIs while giving up three hits, striking out five and walking two in five innings.
Maddie Fornwalt struck out the side in order to end the game via mercy rule after six.
Alex Giesing (3-for-5, triple, two RBIs) and Kayleigh Trojanowski (3-for-4, double, two RBIs) also contributed offensively for the Olympians, whose scheduled home game against Lyndon today has been postponed because of the inclement weather forecast. The O’s next play on Thursday at Williamstown.
West Canaan
Katie Pushee scored the lone run for Mascoma, coming across on a Bears’ infield error in the second innings.
Makayla Clifford had three walks and three strikeouts in five innings, while Katie Ferland went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Royals.
Mascoma is off until next Monday, when it hosts Winnisquam.
Bethel
Whitchester cranked 15 hits, led by Lindsay LaPerle (3-for-5, triple), Amelia Mattrick (4-for-6, two RBIs) and Hayley Mears (3-for-5, RBI).
Laura Vaillancourt went the distance in the circle for the Mountaineers, striking out 14 but allowing 12 walks to go with seven hits.
The Mountaineers visit South Royalton on Thursday.
Newport
Katrina Batista led the offensive attack, going 4-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored. Carl was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs.
Samantha McNeel was 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Gabby Scanlon drove in two and Megan Howard had two hits. Hailey Perry had a triple and scored two runs.
Carl allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out five. Newport visits Gilford on Thursday.
Woodsville
Prest went 4-for-4 with three RBIs to help her own cause, outdone at the plate only by teammate Nikita Duling (5-for-5, five RBIs).
Dee Martin, Suzy Bazzell and Kyleigh Lamarre pitched in with three hits apiece.
The Engineers play at Lisbon on Wednesday.

Hanover
George Geraghty led the way with three goals and four assists. Reed Winter had four goals and one assist.
Graham Penfield had two goals and two assists. Nic Johnson and T.J. Beaver each had two goals. Eli Silovich had a goal and an assist. Brian Pattison, Brian Seltzer, Owen Brooks and Chuck Reichert each scored a goal. Jake Acker and Tristan Gosselin each had two assists.
Zander Lingelbach-Pierce and John Warhold combined to make two saves in goal for the Marauders. Hanover hosts Concord on Wednesday.

Copeland had six goals and an assist; Seibel scored three and assisted on four. Maddie Lyons added four goals and two assists. Amelia Lubrano scored and had one assist.

Lubrano and Copeland had a strong game at the draw, combining for 12 draw controls. The Marauders visit Bishop Guertin on Wednesday.

Brine also added an assist and had four goals from the free position. Kendra MacDonald had three goals and an assist. Katie Berthasavage also scored. Goalie Elizabeth Jones had nine saves.
“ConVal has come a long way. Their goalie was really strong, we had a tough time connecting on passes today but hung with it. We kept our composure, it was a frustrating game,” Raiders coach Sara Ecker said.
Lebanon (2-0) hosts Derryfield on Friday afternoon.
Woodstock
Lauren Kaija had five goals and Grace Vosburgh and Nikki Sweeny each had three.
Kallan Piconi added a goal and two assists.
Abby Kaija and Hannah Milstone each scored. Erica Gebhardt had an assist. Goalie Megan Dalton had six saves.
Woodstock trailed 6-3 at halftime then battled back to quickly knot the score at 7-7 soon after the break.
From then on, it was all Wasps. Woodstock (1-2) visits Mount Anthony on Wednesday.
Manchester
Terran Campbell (8-2), Jacob Peress (8-0), Noah Didehbani (8-1), Nick Haidari (8-3) and Fatima Khan (8-2) earned singles wins for the Raiders.
At doubles, the Lebanon tandems of Ben Ask-Owen Johnstone (8-6) and Eric Spaulding-Lasse Bisp (8-4) were victorious.
Shorthanded Manchester West forfeited its No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches.
Lebanon is scheduled to host Pembroke today.
East Montpelier, Vt.
Ray Kurek won in singles, 6-3, 6-4 for Woodstock. The Wasps visit Hartford on Wednesday.
Brattleboro, Vt.
Westminster, Vt. —
Grace Fraizer (6-2, 6-1), Morgan Biele (6-0, 6-2), Morgan Hartman (6-2, 6-1), Kenzie Biele (6-3, 6-1) and Sarah Findeisen (6-4, 6-0) won singles matches for Woodstock (2-0).
In doubles play, the Wasps’ Chloe Nobel-Kayet MacMaster (6-0, 6-1) and Emma King-Emily Haynes (6-2, 6-2) combined for victories.
It was the first varsity win for Haynes, a freshman.
“We played a solid match, especially for just our second match of the year,” said Woodstock coach Tom Hopewell. “It’d been a while since we played.”
After the long layover, the Wasps play four matches per week for the forseeable future, Hopewell noted.
Wednesday’s home tilt with Otter Valley is the first of matches on three straight days.
Ludlow, Vt.
Ben Meagher shot 50 and Jacob Curtis 54 for the Jacks, who squared off against one golfer from the Presidents and one from Green Mountain.
“Conditions were good,” said Windsor coach Pat Allen. “It was a little chilly, but the course was in great shape.”
The Jacks play at Killington’s Green Mountain National Golf Course in a match hosted by Mill River on Friday.
