Psychiatry Residency
Will Begin This Year

White River Junction — White River Junction Veteran Affairs Medical Center and University of Vermont Medical Center’s new psychiatry residency partnership will begin this year.

The program aims to optimize mental health care for veterans and provide training in evidence-based treatments for PTSD, according to a news release from the White River Junction Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

During the 2016-2017 academic year, a  third-year psychiatry resident from University of Vermont College of Medicine will be stationed at the Burlington VA Lakeside Community Based Outpatient Clinic several days a week, with individual clinical supervision from psychiatrist Dr. James Rustad and individual psychotherapy supervision from psychologist Dr. Sam Standard. The resident will also participate in veteran-centered behavioral health groups.

A fourth-year psychiatry resident from the medical school will do a weekly elective rotation at the clinic, focusing on primary care-mental health integration, with individual clinical supervision from Rustad.

Additionally, four second-year psychiatry residents from the medical school will train throughout the academic year at the VA’s residential recovery center in White River Junction.

Under the supervision of psychiatrist Dr. John Hammel, they will receive training in treating veterans with substance use disorders.
