Rutland — Kylee Beaucage and Emily Ballou apparently have a way of making this varsity softball thing look easy.

Playing their first varsity games, the two sophomores combined to reach base seven times and help the Hartford High softball team to a season-opening 19-8 win over Rutland on Tuesday. Beaucage went 3-for-5 with two doubles and six RBIs for the Hurricanes (1-0), while Ballou got on base four times, including twice on hits, and scored four runs.

The duo fronted a Hartford assault that sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the top of the sixth inning to blow open what had been an 8-7 Hurricane lead. Beaucage had the key blast, a bases-loaded double that helped put the result out of reach.

Brooke Hurd took the win for Hartford and helped herself in the process. Hurd threw a complete-game seven-hitter, fanning three, walking two and surrendering four earned runs. Hurd also delivered three hits and drove in two runs.

Hartford heads to neighboring Woodstock on Thursday.

Trinity 18, Hanover 1 (5)

Manchester — Sarah Kohl delivered pitcher Becca Wilson with a fifth-inning double for Hanover’s only run in a season-opening loss to the Pioneers.

Wilson threw all five innings for the Marauders (0-1), striking out one. “It was our first game, and we struggled from the beginning,” Hanover coach Jessica Belley said. “After the third inning, we started to come together and we were able to get around on the pitcher and make plays in the field.”

The Marauders’ four-game road trip to start the campaign continues today at Goffstown.

Brattleboro 21Windsor 4 (6)

Windsor — The Colonels took advantage of a young Windsor defense still trying to find its form, getting a six-inning win at MacLeay-Royce Field.

Windsor coach Phil Hathron gave Becca Rumrill her first start in the circle and Rumrill performed well, striking out two and yielding five walks. Brattleboro amassed 19 hits, “and some of them found holes,” Hathorn said. “But others dropped in that we could have made plays on, and we will once we get more confidence.”

Brooke McKeen had a hit and scored twice for Windsor, which also got a hit and an RBI from Rumrill, a run batted in from Alyssa Russo and a hit and a run from Emily Williams.

The Yellowjackets entertain Thetford on Thursday.

BaseballOxbow 3, Lake Region 1

Old Orchard Beach, Maine — Eddie White led the Olympians (1-1) with his arm and bat in a victory at The Ballpark at Old Orchard Beach.

White threw a complete game for the O’s, fanning seven with two walks and one unearned run. He also singled, doubled and drove in a run, getting three hits and one RBI of support from teammate Hayden Tomlinson as well.

Oxbow is off until visiting Williamstown on Tuesday.

South Royalton 15Green Mountain 2

South Royalton — John Scoskie threw no-hit ball for five innings and got plenty of support from the top of the lineup as the Royals (3-0) stayed unbeaten on the early season.

Justin Brock went 2-for-5, Nicholas Howe scored three runs and drove in another on a 3-for-4 day and Stephen Paige included two doubles on a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring three for South Royalton. Scoskie made the most of the assistance, striking out nine against three walks.

Robert Ingham and Dominick Small mopped on the mound, each tossing an inning to close out the win. Kyle Spaulding, in his role as courtesy runner for SoRo’s pitchers, ran the bases well and scored twice.

South Royalton takes on Whitcomb-Rochester at the Rochester School on Thursday.

Rutland 1, Hartford 0

Rutland — Despite the final score, the Hurricanes (0-1) came away from a season-opening defeat with a load of positives.

Hunter Perkins and Jordy Allard permitted just two hits over their combined seven innings of mound work. Perkins struck out 10 against one walk, and Allard fanned two and walked two in his two frames. Jake Perkins, returning to athletic action after sustaining a knee injury during football season last fall, joined Allard and Tyler Hamilton in producing Hartford’s three hits.

That’s all Rutland’s Andy Kenosh allowed in notching a complete-game win. Kenosh walked two and struck out five, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh to secure a victory in a well-played game.

“Our approach at the plate was great; we hit a handful of balls well,” Hartford coach Jarrod Grassi said. “Codi Smith hit an absolute rocket at their center fielder at one point. Ten feet either way, and we score runs. But that’s baseball.”

Hartford opens its home schedule at the Maxfield Sports Complex on Thursday against Windsor.

Men’s LacrosseUMass Lowell 11Dartmouth 10

Lowell, Mass. — The River Hawks (3-11) answered a two-goal Dartmouth rush to open the fourth quarter about a minute later for the game-winning goal, dropping the Big Green to 1-11 on the season.

Dartmouth’s Jack Korzelius scored four goals and teammates Richie Loftus and Wiley Osborne contributed two each in a seesaw affair. Korzelius cut into a 10-8 Lowell lead just 20 seconds into the fourth following a faceoff win and Loftus tied the game with 9:06 to go, but the River Hawks’ Nicholas Pino popped in his third goal of the night with 7:47 left for the decider.

Hanover — James Holder, a 2000 graduate of Princeton University, has been hired to coach the Dartmouth men’s and women’s swimming and diving program.

The college announced the appointment on Tuesday. Holder joins the Big Green after six years as head coach at Georgetown. The Hoyas under Holder’s eye set more than 60 school records and earned nearly as many all-Big East Conference selections during his time there. The league also named Holder its co-coach of the year last season.

Prior to Georgetown, Holder spent five years as an assistant at his alma mater, joining in four Ivy League championships with nine NCAA qualifiers and eight All-Americans.

Holder was a two-time all-Ivy performer with the Tigers, setting the school mark in the 400 freestyle and serving as captain as a senior.
