Tampa, Fla. — Drake Caggiula scored twice in the third period and Brock Boeser had a goal and three assists to help North Dakota win its eighth NCAA hockey championship, 5-1 over top-seeded Quinnipiac on Saturday night.

Cam Johnson had 32 saves for the Fighting Hawks (34-6-4). They won their first national title since 2000 to pull within one of Michigan for the record.

Caggiula scored in each of North Dakota’s four tournament wins. He also had two goals in a 4-2 victory over Denver that sent the Fighting Hawks into the Frozen Four final for the 13th time.

Quinnipiac (32-4-7) lost in the title game for the second time in four seasons. The Bobcats trailed 2-1 entering the third period, but their hopes for a first championship faded quickly when Caggiula beat goalie Michael Garteig twice in just over two minutes to break the game open before a crowd of 19,358.

TennisIllness Sidelines World No. 2

Charleston, s.c. — Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber, ranked No. 2 in the world, retired because of a viral illness during her semifinal match at the Volvo Car Open on Saturday, sending American Sloane Stephens to the finals.

Stephens today meets Russian qualifier Elena Vesnina, who upset Italian Sara Errani, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Sock, Monaco in Houston Final

Houston — Fourth-seeded defending champion Jack Sock beat top-seeded John Isner 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Saturday in an all-American semifinal in the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship.

Sock will face Argentina’s Juan Monaco in the final today at River Oaks. The 23-year-old American has won 16 consecutive sets in the event dating to his first-round match last year.

College BasketballStony Brook Hires Men’s Coach

Stony, Brook, n.y. — Stony Brook, coming off its first NCAA Tournament appearance, hired Ohio State assistant Jeff Boals as its basketball coach Saturday.

Boals succeeds Steve Pikiell, who left for Rutgers after leading the Seawolves to the NCAAs. Stony Brook lost to Kentucky in the first round.

UMass Hires Women’s Coach

Amherst, Mass.— Tory Verdi is leaving Eastern Michigan to become the women’s basketball coach at Massachusetts.

Verdi was 72-62 with three consecutive postseason berths since taking over at EMU in 2012.

UMass fired coach Sharon Dawley, a former Dartmouth assistant, in March after the Minutewomen went 46-133 in her six years in Amherst.

SoccerArsenal Can’t Hold Lead

Arsenal needed a flawless finish to the English Premier League season to stand a realistic chance of reeling in surprise leader Leicester.

Thanks to West Ham striker Andy Carroll, that won’t be happening.

Carroll scored an eight-minute hat trick as West Ham came from two goals behind and drew 3-3 with Arsenal in a wild match at Upton Park that summed up the visitors’ season — a strong start, a collapse, and then a recovery that was too little, too late.

Surely only second-place Tottenham can stop Leicester now.

Arsenal is 10 points behind the leaders and three adrift of Spurs, with the top two in action today.

Arsenal is not yet assured of securing a top-four place and Champions League soccer for next season, with Manchester City only two points back in fourth after rallying to a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion thanks to Samir Nasri’s second-half winner. City played a weakened team ahead of the second leg of its Champions League quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain, which is 2-2 after the first leg on Wednesday.

Revs, Toronto Draw

Foxborough, Mass. — Sebastian Giovinco tied it for Toronto in the 58th minute, and Clint Irwin had seven saves to hold off New England 1-1 in Major League Soccer.

Jozy Altidore slipped behind the defense on a breakaway and dropped the ball to a streaking Giovinco for the tying goal for Toronto (1-2-2). Kelyn Rowe scored for New England (1-1-4) in the 14th.

NFL FootballJets, Broncos Make Trade

Denver — The Denver Broncos have agreed to trade left tackle Ryan Clady to the New York Jets along with a seventh-round pick for a fifth-round selection in the upcoming NFL draft. The move was first reported by ESPN.

The move frees up nearly $9 million in cap space for the Super Bowl champs who are searching for a quarterback to help them defend their title.

It gives the Jets a replacement for the retired D’Brickashaw Ferguson, who played 10 rugged seasons in the NFL and never missed a snap due to injury.

Clady played just 18 games the last three seasons.
