Croydon, N.H. — Douglas T. Kern, 60, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 1, 2016. He was born July 7, 1955 in Hoboken, N.J., the son of Edgar and Jean Kern. He grew up in Oakland, N.J. He is survived by his wife, Laurie, the love of his life and best friend. They were married on Dec. 4, 1976. He was a loving father to three children: Jocelyn, Ian, and Travis. After moving around the Tri-State area, the family settled in Warwick, N.Y. where he became a master welder and craftsman. Doug and Laurie moved to New Hampshire in 2005.

Doug will be remembered as a kind-hearted man who took care of everyone who came into his life. Generous with his time and attention, he was always ready to help wherever it was needed. Doug was a spirited fellow who loved animals, the outdoors, spending time with his family, and enjoying life. His tremendous wit and humor were a constant delight to all. He could fix anything, do anything, and seemed to have an infinite supply of creativity. None of this, though, comes close to describing a man who was the best husband, the best father, and the best friend anyone could ask for, and there are no words to fully describe our loss. In short, Doug was an extraordinary man whose patience, wisdom—and presence—will be sorely missed.

He leaves behind his children and his childrens’ spouses who he thought of as his own kids, Nick, Sarah and Danielle. He also leaves behind his siblings and their spouses; Barbara and Mark Laidman, Debbie and Ronnie Pyatak, Janet Kern and Bernie Hickey, and Matt and Colleen Kern; his mother-in-law, Minnie Baker whom he loved very much; his in-laws, Sharry Baker and David Merker, and Cal Heerschap; as well as 10 nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends, particularly his dear friends, Tod and Deb Lloyd.

A celebration service will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Upper Valley Humane Society or any animal shelter in your area.
