Princeton, n.j. — The Dartmouth College softball team started defense of its Ivy League championship going on the right foot on Friday, grabbing a 12-9 win over Princeton in 10 innings at Class of 1895 Field before rain washed out the second game of a scheduled doubleheader.

The Big Green (12-9 overall, 1-0 league) and Tigers (6-18, 0-1) combined on 21 hits, with Dartmouth getting the last ones that mattered. Freshman Morgan Martinelli’s second home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the top of the 10th inning, put the Big Green ahead to stay.

Junior Karen Chaw tripled to right-center field and scored on a Maddie Damore RBI double for an 11-9 cushion. Kathy Dzienkowski’s run-scoring double plated Damore for the three-run lead.

Sophomore Breanna Etheridge worked three innings for the victory, improving to 4-3 on the season. Damore finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBIs for Dartmouth, one of six Big Green batters to deliver multiple hits.

The nightcap rainout will keep Dartmouth on the road for an extra day this weekend. The Big Green will visit Cornell today for a 12:30 p.m. twinbill, then return to Princeton on Sunday to wrap up the series with the Tigers.

Women’s Tennis Columbia 6, Dartmouth 1

Hanover — Katherine Yau provided the Big Green’s only point in an Ivy League season-opening loss to the Lions at the Boss Tennis Center.

Yau, a senior, poasted a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Columbia’s Rima Asatrian to briefly level the match at a point apiece after the Lions claimed the opening doubles point.

The visitors controlled the day from there, although four of their singles victories required a decisive third set.

Dartmouth (8-4 overall, 0-1 league) hosts Cornell this afternoon.
