MUSCLE, CAR

by Staff Report July 18, 2022

As his poodle Maggie keeps watch, Michael O’Connor, the curator at the Enfield Shaker Museum, rings the bell at the museum to mark Juneteenth on June 20, 2022, in Enfield, N.H. Signed into law in 2021, the federal holiday is marked as a day to commemorate the end of slavery. The bell was rung 157 times to celebrate the number of years since emancipation. Pulling the rope from the fifth-floor of the Great Stone Dwelling, O'Connor said the bell is also rung during Veterans Day and for school groups. The Shakers, who lived in Enfield from 1793 until 1923, used the bell as a wake-up call, for meals, evening services and emergencies. (Valley News - Geoff Hansen) Copyright Valley News.
