WINDSOR — Tarin Prior and Cole Jasmin powered a comeback from a halftime deficit as the Hartford High boys basketball team nipped Windsor, 53-50, in a Southern Vermont League encounter at Windsor High School on Thursday evening.

Prior scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half to help the Hurricanes (4-5) overcome the Yellowjackets (2-5).

Windsor held a 22-17 halftime lead when Prior and Jasmin picked up the pace for Hartford. Jasmin (11 points) scored six points in the third quarter as the Canes took the lead, and Prior helped put the game away late by hitting three of four shots from the free-throw stripe.

Their play overshadowed a big 20-point night from the Yellowjackets’ Ethan Lawyer along with a 15-point effort from John Cook. The Canes return to action at Bellows Falls on Saturday. Windsor, which has lost four straight, travels to Otter Valley on Monday.

Rivendell 49, Sharon 32

SHARON — The Raptors stayed unbeaten (7-0) in VPA play by taking a defensive-minded contest from the Phoenix (3-3).

Luke Senn had 19 points, Zach Gould added 10 and Kyle Carter contributred seven for Rivendell, which has won all but one of its games by double digits. Olly Skeet-Browning had 16 points and Ty Chapin netted 13 for Sharon, which has dropped two straight.

Rivendell hosts Woodstock for a makeup game on Monday. TSA visits White River Valley on Saturday.

Randolph 60, Oxbow 47

BRADFORD, Vt. — The Olympians (2-6) got off to a good start, building a 10-point lead after one quarter, before the Galloping Ghosts overpowered them the rest of the way.

Fritz Hauser scored seven of his team-high 16 points in the second stanza, a 20-5 Randolph-led period that reversed the tide of the game. Four Ghosts finished with double figures.

Bryce Ilsley paced the O’s with 19 points, followed by eight from Jace Page. Oxbow visits Woodstock for a makeup contest on Thursday.

Thetford 65, WRV 57 (OT)

THETFORD — Ryen Wolf hit seven of eight free throws in overtime — and nine of 10 on the night — as the Panthers (6-2) won their sixth straight game, rallying past the Wildcats (5-2).

White River Valley led all night, taking a 42-35 lead into the fourth quarter, but TA clawed back and forced overtime on a buzzer-beating tip-in. Wolf, who scored six of Thetford’s 18 points in the final period, dominated the extra period with near-perfect form at the line.

Eli Dunnet had 17 points, Wolfe finished with 13 and Alex Emerson and Eamon Deffner both had 11 for the Panthers. WRV’s Dominic Craven hit 10 shots, including three 3-pointers, en route to a game-high 26 points, with teammate Carder Stratton contributing 12 and Jacob Barry adding 11.

Both teams play on Saturday: Thetford visits Montpelier, and White River Valley entertains Sharon.

GIRLS HOCKEY Hanover 5, Exeter 0

WEST LEBANON — Despite hitting the ice barely 18 hours after returning from a loss in Massachusetts, the Marauders (3-1-1 league, 3-3-1) dominated the team they beat in last winter’s NHIAA Division I state championship game.

Natalie Morhun paced the effort with a three-goal, one-assist night. Morhun notched both first-period goals — the first on a Kaye Linsday helper, the second unassisted — and completed her hat trick in the third period on passes from Sage McGinley-Smith and Meredith Morhun.

Lindsay (two assists) and McGinley-Smith also scored goals.

“It was funny; I thought with getting home at midnight last night (after a 3-2 loss to Andover, Mass.), we would not have a lot of energy after the first few shifts. That proved not to be the case.”

Rebekah Rudd posted a 14-save shutout for Hanover, which hosts Souhegan on Saturday.

ALPINE SKIING Hanover opens season

BENNINGTON, N.H. — Eric Goodney led three Marauders into the boys top 10 to highlight Hanover’s season opening single-course slalom meet at Crotched Mountain.

Goodney finished the two-run race in 1 minute, 30.97 seconds to finish behind Souhegan’s Andrew Taylor (1:28.80) and Bow’s Connor Wachsmuth (1:29.77). The Marauders also saw Wesley Stocken (1:36.02) and Teddy Ruth (1:38.14) record a 6-7 result, while Pierce Hamlin took 12th place (1:46.23) to complete Hanover’s scoring.

The Marauder girls had a 5-6-11-14 result behind Maya Holmes (1:48.79), Ella Goodney (1:50.50), Lilly Clap (1:54.31) and Emily Perras (2:00.40). Con-Val’s Molly Dishong won the race with a two-run time of 1:35.36.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Hollis-Brookline 70, Lebanon 63

HOLLIS, N.H. — A career-high 36-point effort from senior Rebecca Wright wasn’t enough to get the Raiders (3-3 overall, 2-2 NHIAA) past the Cavaliers (4-0 in NHIAA play).

Offense wasn’t the problem, Lebanon coach Tim Kehoe admitted. The Raiders couldn’t contain H-B’s Christina Balsamo, who included four 3-pointers and a 10-for-10 night at the line as part of her 28-point performance.

The Cavs held Lebanon to just two points in the third quarter to take control.

Wright’s previous best had been 31 points, accomplished in her freshman and junior campaigns for the Raiders.

Lebanon will look to bounce back at Manchester West on Friday.

GIRLS HOCKEY Andover (Mass.) 3, Hanover 2

ANDOVER, Mass. — The hosts netted the game-winning goal on a power play with 1:44 to play to spoil the Marauders’ night.

Sage McGinley-Smith scored on passes from Meredith Morhun and Kaye Lindsay for a 1-0 Hanover lead at the first intermission. After Andover struck twice to take the lead, Natalie Morhun leveled things for the Marauders on a power play in the third stanza on assists from McGinley-Smith and Meredith Morhun.

The Marauders thought they had the go-ahead goal with about three minutes left in regulation but saw it waved off by a quick whistle. Goaltender Katie Smith “had a great game,” coach John Dodds said.

BOYS BASKETBALL KUA 68, Lawrence 65

MERIDEN — Rob McCrae helped Kimball Union (8-2) out of an early hole as the Wildcats opened the new year with a home win.

McCrae scored 12 first-half points to help KUA to a 35-30 lead at the break; he finished with a game-high 21 points. Lawrence cut a 10-point second-half deficit to three but couldn’t force overtime on a late 3-point try.

Rob Brown added 16 points for KUA, which hosts St. Paul’s on Saturday.
