GRANTHAM — Dylan Adamovich and Finn Allen were good enough to represent the Stevens High golf team at the NHIAA Division III individual state finals last fall. They’re apparently picking up where they stopped.

Adamovich fired a 3-over-par 38 and Allen was two shots behind him to lead the Cardinals to a season-opening win over Lebanon and Fall Mountain at Eastman Golf Links on Thursday afternoon. Playing Eastman’s par-35 back nine, Adamovich and Allen teamed with C.J. Naugler (44) and Reeve Wilkinson (46) to lead the Cards (2-0) to a 15-stroke win over the host Raiders (1-1).

“It was a great day for high school golf,” said new Lebanon coach Matt Dancosse, who took over for Chris Pollard this season. “It was fun to see the teams get out and compete, especially with all of the uncertainty surrounding the season. Our kids played well and will continue to improve as the season goes on.”

Adamovich finished second individually on Thursday, with Allen in third. All four Stevens players who scored are returnees from a squad that finished sixth at D-III team states at the Mount Washington Resort last October.

Sophomore Roy Shapard led Lebanon with an 8-over 43. Ben Begin (46), Zach Bitler (46) and Stephen Krueger (48) provided the Raiders’ other scoring rounds.

Fall Mountain’s Mitchell Cormier used a late surge to claim the individual medal at 1-under 34. Cormier birdied the par-2 13th hole and eagled the par-5 16th to pull away.

The Raiders’ coronavirus-delayed opener doubled as senior day. Begin and Krueger are joined by Joe Roberts and Zach Howland in Lebanon’s senior class.

The Raiders and Cardinals reunite for a match with Hanover on Friday at Claremont Country Club.

Team scores: Stevens 168, Lebanon 183, Fall Mountain 186.

AMATEUR GOLFHunnewell T-9 at NHGA Seniors

ATKINSON, N.H. — After flirting with a share of the lead on the tournament’s opening day, Carter Golf Club’s Andy Hunnewell claimed a share of ninth place upon the conclusion of the New Hampshire Golf Association Senior Championship at the Atkinson Resort and Country Club on Wednesday.

Hunnewell shot rounds of 74-85—159 to share ninth with Bretwood’s Mike Blair. Hunnewell was just a shot behind leader Phil Pleat, of Nashua Country Club, through the tournament’s opening round on Tuesday.

Pleat won his seventh NHGA Senior title at 73-75—148, beating Bretwood’s Bob Kearney by four strokes. Pleat’s son, Dartmouth graduate James Pleat, won the NHGA Amateur earlier this summer.

COLLEGE HOCKEYCommissioners stall season’s start

The commissioners of the 11 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey conferences announced a delay to the start of the coming season on Thursday.

Multiple media reported a statement from the Hockey Commissioners Association, which represents the group, that left the call to start the season up to each individual league. The HCA cited the ongoing pandemic in the announcement.

“Due to the impact COVID-19 continues to have across the country and within higher education, the start of competition for the Division I college hockey season will be delayed,” the statement read. “Each conference will announce plans for the season individually. We look forward to enjoying the college hockey experience this season.”

The Ivy League had already called off all athletic competition until at least Jan. 1 when it shelved fall sports plans earlier this summer. Dartmouth will being debuting new coaches with both of its hockey programs whenever the season begins.
