Instead, the Big Green will have to work hard this weekend to make sure another ILCS is in its future.
Dartmouth split the final two games of a four-game series with Yale on Sunday at Dartmouth Softball Park, losing a 1-0 decision before winning a 6-1 nightcap. That, combined with Harvard’s second doubleheader sweep of Brown in as many days on Sunday, means the Big Green (26-12 overall, 14-2 league) and the Crimson (25-14 13-3) will be separated by just one game when they meet on Saturday in Boston and again on Sunday back in Hanover.
Sunday’s opening game presented a rematch of Saturday’s first contest, with Yale pitcher Lindsay Efflandt going up against Dartmouth ace Morgan McCalmon. McCalmon tossed a one-hitter to take Saturday’s duel, and Efflandt was nearly her equal in Sunday’s revival, throwing a complete-game three-hitter despite striking out just one.
McCalmon also went the distance, allowing five hits and an unearned run to drop to 15-4 on the season.
Sophomore Breanna Ethridge grabbed the win in game two for the Big Green, her 10th of the year, going five scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and thre strikeouts. Lauren Stone grabbed the save with two frames of one-run work.
Dartmouth jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. Freshman Kassidy Williams delivered a two-run double for the rally’s biggest blow. Williams also tripled in the fourth and scored on a two-run Chloe Madill home run.
Jackson, n.j.
Cornell’s Luke Graboyes posted a 3-under-par 221 to win the individual title, one shot better than Dartmouth’s Ian Kelsey. Dartmouth finished a 47-over 911 for the three days, just four strokes behind the Crimson (907). Yale took third at 919.
The Big Green’s Charles Cai also finished in the top 10, shooting a final-round 78 to place ninth overall. Scott Jaster saved his tournament-best even-par 72 for the final day as well and tied for 14th place.
New London
Up 1-0 thanks to an unearned run in the first inning, Colby-Sawyer added three more in the third. Hartford High graduate Justin Devoid plated Andrew Pratt with an RBI single and later scored. Before the rally ended, Woodstock High grad Doug Avellino popped an RBI double for a 4-0 Charger lead.
The visitors halved the deficit, but a perfectly executed Austin Butler squeeze bunt plated pinch runner Shawn McCarthy with the eventual winning run in the sixth for Colby-Sawyer.
New London
Alex Wright, Ryan Sawyer, Ryan Broderick, Shawn Bissonette, Alex Townsend and Julius Graefe swept singles for Colby-Sawyer, dropping just eight games over 12 sets between them. The Chargers’ doubles tandems surrendered just one game.
Windsor
Jake Meagher (2-for-2, two RBIs four runs) and Seth Balch (1-for-2, three runs) both tripled for the Yellowjackets (1-2), the later’s clearing the bases to help the Jacks build their large lead in the first.
Windsor’s Nick Kapuscinski was solid on the hill, striking out six while giving up five hits and two walks in an abbreviated complete game.
Thetford catcher Finbar Curtain drove in the Panthers’ only run, scoring Jack Sweet with a double. Sweet had singled and stole second. Seth Boyce went 2-for-2 at the plate for Thetford (0-2), which tries again for its first today at Northfield.
Meriden
Erin Gregory-Davis and Ella Malone rallied from a 2-7 gap in their doubles match before rallying for a 9-7 win. Similarly, Christina Ryan and Sam Vocatura erased a 4-6 deficit for an eventual 8-6 decision. Kelly Do and Zulal Ozyer completed Kimball Union’s doubles sweep, and Vocatura, Hana Caloras, Do, Gregory-Davis and Malone claimed wins at singles.
