CANAAN — A 16-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday night after police say he led officers on a chase around Canaan and surrounding towns in a stolen car that he then crashed, according to a news release from the Canaan Police department.

Police have not released the teen’s name or the list of his charges. Messages to Canaan Police Chief Samuel Frank were not returned Wednesday.

The incident started around 6:17 p.m. Tuesday when Canaan police were called to the site of a car crash on Route 4 in Orange and learned that the driver ran into the woods after the crash, the release said. The car, a 2018 Kia Sorento, had been reported stolen from the Carter Community Building Association on Taylor Street in Lebanon on Aug. 11, Lebanon Police Chief Phil Roberts said Wednesday.

New Hampshire State Police and Canaan Police searched the area with dogs until 7:40, when an officer saw the teen on the rail trail near Grafton, according to the release. However, the teen evaded police by running through a swamp and back into a nearby woods, Canaan police said.

A short while later a Grafton resident called police to say he saw the teen on his property, prompting Canaan and Grafton police to start searching for the teen in the dark using a dog and a drone, the release said.

As police looked for the teenager, they got another call that a Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck had been stolen out of Grafton. Police spotted the truck shortly after the call and tried to pull it over in a traffic stop, but the driver — later identified as the teenager — ignored them, fleeing from officers through spike strips that were set up to stop him, the release said.

Police followed the truck onto Canaan Street, where police wrote “the vehicle was all over the road and was traveling well over the posted speed limit,” according to the release.

The driver lost control of the truck around 365 Canaan Street, and the truck flipped over, snapping a utility pole and continuing to roll over until the driver was thrown from the vehicle, police wrote.

The teenager was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and has been charged with “numerous” offenses, according to Canaan Police.

Roberts said no charges have been filed in relation to the car theft out of Lebanon and that any charges would go through juvenile court.
