NEWPORT — Firefighters responding to a Unity Road blaze rescued one person from a second-story using a roof ladder on Saturday, according to Newport Fire Chief Steve Yannuzzi.
The three residents staying at the home on 33 Unity Road, along with their two cats, were uninjured in the fire, Yannuzzi said.
Fire crews were called to the home around 6:30 p.m. Saturday night and found heavy smoke coming from the first floor. They also learned one person was still stuck inside, and used a roof ladder fixed to their truck to rescue the person, Yannuzzi said.
Crews continued to battle the flames for another hour and a half until it was deemed under control around 8 p.m., Yannuzzi said.
The department is still investigating the cause of the blaze, but Yannuzzi said it was confined to the first floor, and specifically the kitchen, which has a wood stove.
The family, who rent the the house, were not able to move back in following the blaze because of the damage to the first floor. However, Yannuzzi said the house was not destroyed by the fire.
