NEWPORT — Town officials announced this week that Newport received nearly $820,000 in grants this year for a variety of projects including infrastructure improvements and emergency management.
The largest grant of $354,000 from the Northern Border Regional Commission is for construction of a new water intake system at Gilman Pond in Unity, the town’s primary water source. The new system replaces one built in 1895.
A Community Development Block Grant from the New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority of $126,000 will replace the emergency generator at the wastewater pump station in Guild and an $87,750 grant from the Land and Heritage Investment Program will pay for Opera House renovations including new floors, the re-pointing of interior and exterior brick work, installation of exterior handrails at the rear entrance, repair of sagging landings and installation of storm water drainage.
Newport Police received more than $100,000 in grants for several items including an emergency management trailer, a portable generator and a backup generator. The town clerk’s office was awarded a $9,335 grant to conserve and digitize war documents from 1812-1907.
