Fairlee, Vt. —
Born in Strafford, Vt. to Scott & Dorothy Moses, Mary graduated Theford Academy in 1953. She attended Northampton Business School, then went on to a long career as a proofreader at Equity Publishing in Orford, N.H. and Dartmouth Printing Company in Hanover, N.H. She also worked part-time as a postmistress at the North Thetford and Ely post offices for many years. She married Winston Godfrey in November 1954 and they shared 37 years of marriage before he passed away.
Mary was a vibrant and independent woman who, above all else, loved to spend time with family and friends, especially at Christmas. Known as “Nana” to everyone who had the luck of knowing her, she was a kind soul and a born caretaker. She loved good food, live music, travel and hearing about peoples’ adventures. She was a big fan of the Red Sox and Celtics, as well as of any sports her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids played. She enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles, and was an avid gardener who enjoyed the outdoors. She was a fixture at Isabel’s Café in North Thetford on Tuesday mornings, and on most every Sunday morning she could be found at the Fairlee Diner.
Mary was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley and Scott Jr, and a sister, Elizabeth. She is survived by one sister, Darlene Phillips, of Rutland, Vt., as well as six children and their spouses: Corinne & MIchael Moore of Fairlee, Kathy & Duane Cook of Fairlee, Craig & Cheryl Godfrey of Enfield, Bonnie Williams of Thetford, Larry & Donna Godfrey of Post Mills, and Mark & Rosalind Godfrey of White River Jct. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at the Dowd’s Country Inn in Lyme, N.H. on Sunday, Sept. 18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local food bank.
