HOLDERNESS, N.H. — Hanover High graduate Adam Glueck, representing the Ford Sayre Ski Council, outraced the field for the victory in the Cheri Walsh Memorial Eastern Cup 10K classic cross country ski race on Feb. 21 at Holderness Academy.
A Dartmouth College senior, Glueck led four Ford Sayre skiers into the top 10 with a winning time 27 minutes, 25.7 seconds. Glueck had the top times at both splits and eventually beat Bowdoin College’s Carson Williams by more than a minute.
Ford Sayre’s Dirk Andrew was fifth (29:08.1). Sam Murray took seventh (29:24.6), and Jacob Slaughter (29.27.2) was one spot back in eighth. Elsa Bolinger led the Ford Sayre women with a third-place result in her 5K race (16:11.8).
Sarah Glueck was second (17:23.8) and Wyethe Murray fourth (17:56.3) for the top Ford Sayre times in the girls U16 5K classic. Sawyer Weale placed third among the U16 boys (14:45.2) in their 5K classic race.
DUBLIN, N.H. — Ford Sayre’s Sawyer Weale and Sarah Glueck swept both of their sprint races at the Feb. 20 Eastern Cup at the Dublin School Nordic Center.
Weale won the 1.4-kilometer freestyle races in the boys U16 division, taking the first in 3:30.6 and the second in 3:44.5. Ford Sayre’s Andrew Davis was 21st and 23rd, respectively.
Glueck powered to joint victories in the girls U16 division, winning the first race in 4:20.9 and the second in 4:27.0. Wyethe Murray was fourth (4:30.0) and fifth (4:38.9). Madeleine Gleeson was 15th and 13th in her starts.
Adam Glueck split the men’s sprints with Flamingo Race Team athlete John Henry Paluszek, finishing behind his rival in the opening race and winning the rematch (3:21.48). Ford Sayre’s Sam Murray and Dirk Andrew both had a pair of top-10 results. Elsa Bolinger was the top Ford Sayre competitor among the women, going 14th in both runs.
CRAFTSBURY, Vt. — Former Oxbow High athlete Keelan Durham raced to a sixth-place finish at the Bill Henchley Memorial Vermont Cup Nordic ski races on Feb. 21.
Durham, on break from Williams College and representing Ford Sayre, posted a time of 50:00.3 in the men’s 20K freestyle at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. A former Ford Sayre racer competing for Stratton Mountain School, Jack Lange, was eighth (50:27.2).
Hanover High’s Simon Phipps tuned up for this week’s NHIAA Division I finals with a fifth-place finish (20:21.2) in the 7.5K skate for the U16 boys, a division in which Woodstock Nordic Runners’ James Underwood came in 13th (22:16.5). Meg MacLaury had the top Ford Sayre finish among U16 girls in their 7.5K event, taking 16th place (28:20.1).
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Hanover High and Ford Sayre competitor Caleb Zuckerman took fourth place in his division at the New York State Ski Racing Association Nordic Championships at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Feb. 21.
Zuckerman recorded a time of 22:25.8 to finish about two minutes off the pace of winner Andrew Scanio (20:34.3), of Lake Placid, N.Y., in the U16 junior boys class 2 freestyle race, held over 7.5 kilometers. Zuckerman was the only out-of-state competitor in the field.
LYME CENTER — Ford Sayre is sending 17 skiers to the upcoming NHARA U14 State Championship races after completing Western Division qualifying with a giant slalom at Dartmouth Skiway on Feb. 21.
Hailey Pastel, Campbell Madden, Sadie Ross, Reese Hamlin, Lila Muirhead, Mary Westrich, Amelia Holthoff and Sofia Tomlinson-Sanchez will represent the club at the girls state championships based on points accumulated during the winter. The group heads to Wildcat on Sunday for a GS before wrapping up with a March 13 slalom at Gunstock.
Ford Sayre is sending Sam Ames, Andrew McGuire, Gavin Munson, Ian Holmes, Wynn Bushell, Ben Ames, Hayden Clapp, Alexander Muirhead and Henry Ruth to the boys championship. They’ll hold their GS at Waterville Valley on Sunday before a slalom at Gunstock on March 14.
Seven other racers will compete in the NHARA State Finals slalom on Saturday: Henry Steffen, Ely Steffen, Alex Orsino, Gus Thompson, Rachel Kohl, Harper Traendly and Nora Holmes. The boys will compete at Waterville Valley, while the girls head to King Pine.
McGuire provided the highlight at the Skiway by winning the two-run boys GS in 1:30.66, narrowly edging out Sam Ames (1:30.92). Holmes, Munson, Bushell, Ben Ames, Muirhead and Clapp landed in the top 10. Sam Ames was a team-best in an additional third run done for qualifying points.
Pastel ranked second among the girls (1:34.93) and won the added third run (46.53) to lead Ford Sayre. Ross, Campbell, Hamlin, Westrich and Lila Muirhead all ranked in the top 10 in the two-run GS.
