Earlier Thursday, the team bought out the contract of defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, saving $2.83 million.
Krug’s 40 assists last season were ninth among all NHL defensemen. He also had four goals and was second on the team only to Zdeno Chara with 21 minutes, 36 seconds on ice per game.
In 241 games over four NHL seasons, Krug has 30 goals and 95 assists.
In 2013, Krug joined the team during the playoffs after appearing in only one regular-season game and had four goals and two assists to help the Bruins advance to the Stanley Cup Final.
A native of Livonia, Mich., Krug was a Michigan State captain and Hobey Baker Award finalist.

The suspension is not related to the league’s domestic violence policy, but Manziel would be subject to standards that were toughened two years ago if he signs with another team. The 23-year-old Manziel, released by Cleveland in March, faces a misdemeanor assault charge in Dallas involving former girlfriend Colleen Crowley.
The 2012 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Texas A&M was suspended the same week he posted pictures on Instagram from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The post included a reference to his father, Paul Manziel, who called his son a “druggie” following a report from The Associated Press of one of his attorneys mistakenly sending a text that indicated doubts whether Manziel could stay clean.
As Manziel’s domestic case has played out, he has been photographed partying from Hollywood to Las Vegas to New York in recent months. His own family has expressed concern about his well-being after he was cut by the Browns following two underwhelming seasons.
Linebacker Rolando McClain was suspended 10 games Thursday for his second violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy in as many years, leaving the Dallas defense with three banned starters to open the season.
McClain, who was suspended the first four games last year, is now sidelined along with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who was suspended four games on a substance-abuse violation after an appeal was denied.
The other suspended player projected to start is pass rusher Randy Gregory, who also will be out four games on a substance-abuse ban. The former Nebraska standout slid to the Cowboys in the second round of last year’s draft after testing positive for marijuana at the NFL combine.
New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson has been suspended by the NFL for the first game of the 2016 regular season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
Richardson will be eligible to return to the Jets’ active roster on Sept. 12 following the team’s Sept. 11 opener against Cincinnati. But he can participate in all preseason practices and games.
He pleaded guilty in January to resisting arrest after police clocked him driving at speeds as high as 143 mph in Missouri last July. Resisting arrest is listed by the NFL as a violation of the personal conduct policy.

Pierre-Paul lost an index finger and part of his thumb, and was required to have reconstructive surgery to save his middle finger, when a device exploded in his hand on July 4. The two-time Pro Bowler missed half of last season because of the injury, and he struggled using the hand when he returned because he wore a boxing-like glove playing. It limited his ability to grab opponents.
In the public service announcement, there is a reenactment of Pierre-Paul’s accident. He tells Kaye that he lit a device and it blew up almost immediately. It is followed by a picture of his severely damaged hand, another of him in the hospital with his hand bandaged, and one of the football player and his young son.

McGirt broke through for his first PGA Tour victory last month at the Memorial. In his World Golf Championship debut, he made six birdies and finished off his round with a 45-foot par save.
Jason Day, the No. 1 player in the world, was among those at 67.
U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson had a U.S. Open kind of round — 15 pars, two birdies and a bogey — for a 69.
The surprise was Jordan Spieth, who putted for birdie (and missed) only one time in 10 holes. He hung in there with several big par putts, closed with four birdies and shot 68.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has told the world his secret: He’s joining Manchester United.
The enigmatic Swedish striker said Thursday on his official Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts that his next club will be the English Premier League giant. Ibrahimovic would be joining as a free agent, with his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expiring in the offseason.
The English Premier League club is making no comment.
“Time to let the world know. My next destination is ManUtd,” the 34-year-old Ibrahimovic wrote on Twitter above an image of United’s club badge. He said the same on his Instagram account.
Ibrahimovic, who retired from international duty with Sweden after his country’s exit from the European Championship last week, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks.
He told a news conference last month that he had made a decision on his next club but would not elaborate.
