Group shows at Upper Valley art venues are like a sampler of what’s going on in the neighborhood, a way to take the temperature of the area’s sizable population of visual artists.
The Library Arts Center, in Newport, N.H., opens one of the bigger and better shows in this genre on Saturday. The annual Juried Regional Exhibit can feel overstuffed at first, but give it a long look and common threads will emerge.
The show includes 62 works chosen from 168 entries by jurors Stephanie Kyriazis, chief of interpretation at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, and Penny Whitman, a community and economic development field specialist with UNH Cooperative Extension.
A reception for the show is planned for 5 to 7 p.m., next Friday, Feb. 15, and the show is up through March 21.
Also on view at the LAC: “Text & Textiles,” which mixes artworks and poetry that make reference to textiles. The art comes from members of the Women’s Caucus for Art-NH Chapter and the verse from New Hampshire poets selected by the state’s Poet Laureate Alice B. Fogel. This show follows the dates of the juried exhibition.
The Mezzanine Gallery in Woodstock’s Norman Williams Public Library hosts “Love Your Library,” a group exhibition celebrating the beauty of the 1884 library, which was extensively renovated at the turn of the century. The artists in the show range from the celebrated 20th-century painter Ivan Albright to Lily Stover, 10. A closing reception is planned for 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 15.
Two Rivers Printmaking Studio is holding a series of workshops led by Upper Valley printmakers. The first, “Nontoxic Printmaking: Solarplates for Photographers,” taught by Linda Bryan, is scheduled for Feb. 23 and 24.
