Local Roundup: Sunapee’s Hulton Tosses a Gem

Sunapee — Darren Hulton took a perfect game into the seventh inning to lead the Sunapee High baseball team in a 5-1 victory over visiting Newport on Monday afternoon.

Hulton struck out 14 for the Lakers. Jordan Chappell led the Sunapee attack, going 3-for-3 with a double, a RBI and a run scored. Nick Ducharme had a run-scoring double and Hulton had a double and a run scored. Cade Robinson added an RBI single and scored a run.

“I have to tip my cap to (Hulton). He did a great job,” said Newport coach Jon Hamel. “We just didn’t come ready to swing the bats today.”

Login Barry broke up the no-hitter with a single in the seventh inning for the Tigers. Tony Robertson would eventually come around to score on a passed ball. Losing pitcher Kyle Rossiter struck out three, allowed six hits and walked four in a complete game.

The game was the fifth in six days for Newport, which is now off until a home-and-home doubleheader against Stevens on Friday.

Sunapee (3-3) visits Hinsdale today.

Thetford 8, Rivendell 7

Thetford — Things fell apart for Rivendell in the fourth inning, as Thetford strung together four runs on two hits, one walk, one error and two pitches that hit Panther batters.

Raptors starter Dashiel Fukushima allowed six hits in five innings. Charlie Bradley was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Rivendell (3-2) stranded eight runners on base, and had the bases loaded trailing by one run with two outs in the seventh. It hosts Chelsea on Saturday.

Thetford’s Seth Boyce and Owen Deffner combined for seven strikeouts, two walks, five hits and four earned runs in the first six innings. Alex Emerson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and an RBI. The Panthers (4-2) host Oxbow today.

Windsor 7, Bellows Falls 0

Westminster, Vt. — Seth Balch struck out 15 batters and allowed only two hits and two walks in a complete game shutout.

Robert Slocum was 2-for-2 with a walk, three RBIs and three stolen bases. Ben Meagher was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Windsor (8-2) travels to Fair Haven on Wednesday.

Hanover 9, Souhegan 1

Hanover — The Marauders benefited from seven Souhegan errors to top the Sabers.

KeganSilovich had two hits, walked twice and scored a pair of runs for Hanover. Charlie Goodrich had a hit, walked and scored twice. David Lehmann singled and scored two runs. Moises Celaya pitched the first five innings, striking out six for the win.

Hanover begins a stretch of four games in four days when it hosts Lebanon on Wednesday.

Chelsea 9, South Royalton 7

Chelsea, Vt. — The Royals allowed seven unearned runs to suffer their first loss of the season.

Dominick Small was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored for SoRo. Jake Hewitt added two hits and two RBIs. Zeb Perrault had two doubles and drove in one. SoRo scored five runs in the third inning to lead, 5-3, but Chelsea countered with five runs in the fifth to take the look for good.

Jake Colby pitched 6 ⅓ innings for Chelsea, striking out 10. Shawn King had a two-run double.

Small pitched the first 4 ⅔ innings for the Royals; Hewitt added 1 ⅓ innings in relief. The pair combined to allow just five hits. SoRo (7-1) visits Whitcomb-Rochester today.

Stevens 10, Mascoma 2

Claremont — Derrick Stanhope struck out eight and allowed only two earned runs in a complete game effort to lift the Cardinals to 4-4. 

Ethan Brueckner allowed 11 hits and three walks in 5 innings for Mascoma (1-5). Brueckner also had two hits and an RBI. Stevens scored 10 runs on 11 hits for the win. Freshman Owen Taylor was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI single to lead the Cardinals offense, earning his first varsity hit.

Mascoma travels to Gilford on Wednesday. Stevens travels to Franklin on Thursday.

Woodsville 6, Profile 3

Bethlehem, n.h. — The Engineers scored all six of their runs in the top of the sixth inning to beat the Patriots.

Cooper Davidson tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and one earned run while fanning 12. Donny Bowman was 4-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases, a run scored and a RBI. Seanon May had two hits, stole a base and drove in one. Calvin Roy had an RBI pinch-hit double.

The Engineers (8-2) visit Littleton on Wednesday.

Goffstown 12, Lebanon 0 (5)

Goffstown, n.h. — The Raiders managed only two hits in five innings to fall to 2-7.

Matt Eylander gave up nine runs in the first two innings, allowing six hits and two walks. He also hit three batters. Lebanon travels to Hanover on Wednesday.

Burr & Burton 11, Hartford 1

Manchester, Vt. — The Canes suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs. Hartford (3-4) will look to regroup when it hosts Rutland on Wednesday.

Twin Valley 8, Woodstock 6

Whitingham, Vt. — The Wasps fell to 2-4 with a loss to the Wildcats.

Caleb Webb was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI for Woodstock. Andy Seiple singled, scored two runs and drove in one. Chase Christiansen pitched the first four innings for the Wasps, striking out four while allowing five runs on 10 hits and two walks.

Woodstock will host Twin Valley for a rematch on Wednesday.

Softball

Newport 8, Sunapee 1

Sunapee — Lacey McNeel allowed just one run on three hits and struck out eight to keep the Tigers perfect at 5-0.

Stacia Dame led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. McNeel scored twice and stole two bases. Newport scored a combined seven runs in the third and fourth innings. KalleighDurkee scored Sunapee’s lone run in the fourth.

Newport hosts Hanover today. Sunapee (2-3) travels to Hinsdale this afternoon.

Windsor 8, Mill River 7

Windsor — CarahRugg struck out five and allowed six walks and seven hits in seven innings to lead the Yellowjackets to their second win of the season.

The Jackets scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning on four hits. Mill River cut the lead to one run, 8-7, in the seventh but a Rugg strikeout and two pop-ups caught by Windsor first baseman Kristin Clark secured the victory.

Windsor (2-7) travels to Bellows Falls on Wednesday.

Whitcomb-Rochester 7, Black River 6

Ludlow, Vt. — Whitchester freshman Fiona Vaillancourt struck out 10 in four innings of relief to help the Mountaineers stay perfect at 4-0.

Chelsie Trask started the game and allowed four hits, three walks and four runs in the first three innings. She also struck out five. Trask then helped the Mountaineers take control of the game in the fifth inning, hitting a grand slam. Whitchester scored five runs on six hits and a walk in the fifth. Toni Turner was 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.

The Mountaineers travel to Danville today.

Oxbow 20, Woodstock 3

Woodstock — MaddieFornwalt struck out 15 and went 3-for-6 to lead the Olympians (5-1).

Fornwalt had a home run and scored four runs in support of her own complete game effort. Erika Slicer had a single, double and a triple. Amber Glaude was 3-for-4 with a triple.

Oxbow visits Thetford this afternoon.

Woodsville 23, Profile 3 (5)

Bethlehem, n.h. — McKenzie Dennis was 4-for-5 to lead the Engineers’ offensive onslaught.

Maggie Daly was 2-for-2 with five RBIs. Emily Prest had three hits and drove in three. Morgan Wagstaff was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Alyssa Prest pitched all five innings, striking out five.

Woodsville (9-1) will visit Littleton on Wednesday.

Hartford 23, Burr & Burton 7 (5)

Manchester, Vt. — The Hurricanes scored 11 runs in the fifth inning and another six runs in the sixth to improve to 4-5.

Carrie Comstock hit a home run and Hannah Cooney hit a bases-loaded double for Hartford. Sam Walz pitched six innings, striking out seven and walking six. The Canes host Rutland on Wednesday.

Goffstown 14, Lebanon 0

Goffstown, n.h. — The Raiders dropped to 0-9 this spring and will travel to Trinity on Wednesday.

Boys Lacrosse

Coe-Brown 9, Lebanon 8

Northwood, n.h. — Nate Chickering had six goals but the Raiders dropped a heartbreaker to the host Bears.

Jack and Luke Sandmann each had a goal. Aaron Damren had three assists and Colin Kiernan had one. Goalie CaidenSkakalski made 27 saves. The Raiders (1-6) visit InterLakes on Wednesday.

Exeter 14, Hanover 8

Exeter, n.h. — The Marauders (4-8) were outscored 6-2 in the second half by the Blue Hawks.

Graham Penfield had four goals and an assist for Hanover, which trailed 8-6 at halftime. Brian Pattison added two goals and one assist. Charlie Baughman and Pete Warhold each scored a goal.

Hanover hosts Merrimack on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse

Woodstock 11, Chelsea 8

Woodstock— Brittney Poljacik scored six goals and provided two assists to help the Wasps get their first win of the season. 

Gina Sorrentino added two goals and two assists and Maggie Parker made 12 saves in goal. Woodstock (1-5) travels to Rice on Wednesday.

Lebanon 11, Coe-Brown 8

Lebanon — IzzyPeress had three goals and an assist and Megan Gradijan had three goals to lead the Raiders (1-5). Lena Nowell made 10 saves.

Clara Cole had a goal and an assist and Jessie Hastings, Katie Berthasavage, Anna Wolke and Sydney Gonyea each scored once. Libby Stone had an assist for Lebanon, which hosts Inter-Lakes on Wednesday.

John Stark 9, Hanover 6

Weare, n.h. — The Marauders dropped their second straight, falling to 4-6 this spring. Hanover hosts Merrimack Valley on Wednesday.

Boys Tennis

Woodstock 7, Bellows Falls 0

Westminster, vt. — The Wasps finished with three perfect matches and a uncontested walkover at No. 5 singles to get its first win of the season. The Wasps (1-2) begin a stretch of six games in six school days with a home match against Brattleboro on Wednesday.

Hanover 9, Portsmouth 0

Hanover — The Marauders survived the Clippers in a match much closer than the score indicates.

Matty Siegel won 8-5 at No. 1 singles and Aidan Biglow added an 8-2 victory at No. 2. The other four singles matches came down the wire. Jasper Meyer won 9-7, Lincoln Adam won 8-6, Trevor Siegel won 9-7 and Will Blinkhorn won 9-8 (7-4).

Biglow and Meyer added an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. The Siegels won 8-6 in doubles and Adam/Blinkhorn won 8-4. Hanover (8-1) hosts Merrimack on Wednesday.

Souhegan 8, Lebanon 1

Lebanon — The Sabers remained unbeaten at 9-0 and alone at the top of the NHIAA Division II standings with a win over the Raiders (5-2).

Seamus Hickey and Jacob Willeman won 8-4 in doubles for Lebanon. Hickey lost a tight battle with Souhegan’s Kyle Gibson, 8-6, at No. 3 singles. The Raiders visit Oyster River on Wednesday.

Girls Tennis

Woodstock 6, Rutland 1

Woodstock — The Wasps improved to 6-0 with a win over the Raiders.

MomoBiele won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Grace Frazier (6-2, 6-0), KenzieBiele (6-3, 6-1) and Chloe Noble (6-0, 6-1) also won in dominant fashion. Katie McMaster won the match of the day at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 over Rutland’s Sam Shinn; their match was an hour and 50 minute marathon.

Lydia Howe and Olivia Marsicovetere added a 6-1, 6-0 victory in doubles. Woodstock visits Stowe on Wednesday.

Hanover 9, Manchester Memorial 0

White River Junction — The Marauders dropped just two games in sweeping Memorial at the Maxfield Sports Complex. Hanover (10-1) starts a stretch of three matches in three days with a visit to Merrimack on Wednesday.

Kearsarge 7, Stevens 2

 Sutton, n.h. — The Cardinals dropped to 0-9 this spring. Stevens will travel to Monadnock on Wednesday.

CSC Gets NCAA Foe

New London — Colby-Sawyer will take on Pennsylvania’s Wilkes University when it opens the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday at Middlebury (Vt.) College.

The Chargers (9-10) enter on a six-match winning streak heading into their sixth straight NCAA appearance. Colby-Sawyer in search of the program’s first NCAA tournament win. The Chargers fell to Baruch, 5-3 , in last year’s first round.

Women’s Tennis

 Chargers NCAA-Bound

New London — Colby-Sawyer heads to its sixth straight NCAA Division III tournament on Friday, meeting Johnson & Wales in a first-round match at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

As with the men, the Charger women won their NAC championship to claim an automatic NCAA invitation. Colby-Sawyer went 16-5 this season and has won first-round matches at nationals the last two years.

Dartmouth’s Stone Drafted by CFL

Hanover — Dartmouth running back Ryder Stone was selected in the fifth round, 38th overall, by the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes in the CFL Draft last Thursday.

Stone, a 5-foot-10, Calgary, Alberta native, finished his collegiate career with 1,502 career rushing yards and 132 points for the Big Green — both of which rank 14th all-time at Dartmouth. He was the eighth player chosen from a college in the    United States. 

Baseball

Michel, Ostmo Receive Ivy Honors

Hanover — Dartmouth junior Nate Ostmo was named Ivy League player of the week and sophomore Austen Michel was named Ivy League pitcher of the week by the conference for their performances against Brown and Princeton in the last seven days.

Ostmo went 6-for-17 with a triple, two home runs, five runs, three RBIs in four games for the Big Green. Michel threw seven scoreless innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory in a 2-1, 13-inning walk-off win against Brown on Tuesday. Dartmouth hosts Middlebury on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Nelson Named Rookie, Player of the Week

Princeton, N.J. — Dartmouth freshman Schae Nelson was tabbed Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week in the final week of the regular season.

Nelson went 5-for-8 at the plate in the weekend series sweep against Brown, finishing the week with six RBIs, a home run, four runs scored and two walks. The Big Green host Harvard for a chance at the Ivy crown on Saturday.
