UNH Program Helps Students With Intellectual Disabilities

Concord — The University of New Hampshire has received a grant to fund a program that bolsters the college experience for students with intellectual disabilities.

The Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire launched UNH-4U with the goal of helping these students with problem solving, socializing and other challenges.

The two-year program combines traditional classroom time with inclusive housing options and academic coaches.

The goal is to promote independent living among the students and enhance their social development.

The effort is being funded by a grant from the John Vance ACCESS Fund, a donor-advised program of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

UNH estimates that there are more than 35,000 residents with intellectual disabilities living in New Hampshire. These residents are more likely to be underemployed and live in poverty

New Hampshire Gets Funding To Prevent Sexual Violence

Concord — New Hampshire is getting close to $300,000 from the federal government to help prevent sexual violence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant has been awarded to the state Department of Health and Human Services. In announcing the grant, members of the state’s Democratic congressional delegation said it would bolster efforts to educate the public, particularly young people, about how to prevent such violence.

Wildlife Vet to Discuss Fatal Deer Disease

Montpelier — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is holding two public meetings this month on chronic wasting disease, which it says poses a serious threat to the state’s deer population. The disease has been spreading across North America for a half-century and was recently discovered again on a Canadian game farm.

It infects white-tailed deer, moose and other members of the deer family and is always fatal. At the public meetings a wildlife veterinarian will discuss the disease, how it spreads and how it impacts deer populations, and efforts necessary to keep the disease from entering Vermont. The meetings are planned for Jan. 24 in Newport at the North Country Career Center and Jan. 31 in Barre at the Barre Fish and Game Club.

Wine Week Celebrating Two ‘Wine Dynasties’ This Year

Concord — New Hampshire’s Wine Week is celebrating two “Wine Dynasties” this year.

The husband-and-wife team of Gina Gallo and Jean-Charles Boisset are featuring a guided wine tasting at a seminar-style event on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Puritan Conference Center in Manchester. Boisset implemented organic and biodynamic farming techniques throughout his family’s estate vineyards. Gallo is a third-generation winegrower This year’s Winter Wine Spectacular to raise money for Easterseals New Hampshire is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 24, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Downtown. More than 1,800 wines are available for sampling.
