Woodstock — The Woodstock Union High girls hockey team staged an impressive comeback Wednesday during an 8-4 defeat of rival Hartford at Union Arena.

Trailing, 3-0, after a period, the Wasps reeled off five goals during the second period’s opening eight minutes, and led, 5-3, at the second intermission.

“It was a closer battle than we were expecting,” Woodstock assistant coach Kelley Ruch said. “They gave us a run for our money.”

Faye Stevens had two goals and an assist and Allie Cimas scored twice for Woodstock, which also received goals from Khara Brettell, Kendyl Boisvert, Sami Yates and Lizzy Peck. Boisvert and Yates had two assists and Bitty Alexander, Peck and Brettell had single assists.

Hartford built its lead on goals by Izzy Stack, Greer McCarty and Jasmine Wilson, who also pulled the visitors within 5-4 with her second tally of the night, 10 seconds into the final period. Nora Knudsen had an assist and Zoey Pfeiffer made 27 saves. Ava Dodson stopped 10 shots for Woodstock (4-9-1).

“They got a couple of power-play goals and we had a couple of defensive breakdowns,” Hartford coach Bill Goldsworthy said of his 2-10-1 team’s second-period collapse. “It’s the first time in a long time we’ve played a sluggish period like that.”

Woodstock visits Brattleboro on Saturday, and Hartford hosts Kingdom the same day.

Kimball Union 6, Brewster 1

Meriden — Molly Davis, Kyra Russman, Taylor Coburn, Mikah Baptiste, Gretchen Dann and Ashley Penney scored for the Wildcats (10-5-1). Shannon Moran made four saves for KUA, which hosts Proctor on Saturday.

Boys Hockey

Hanover 6, Trinity 3

West Lebanon — Freshman Casey Graham scored twice and Hans Williams and Sylas Oberting added two assists each and the Marauders avenged a three-goal loss to the Pioneers from last week.

“We got off to a horrendous start with only two shots in the first period last time,” Hanover coach Dick Dodds said. “This time we had 15 shots in the first period and that really got us going, even though we only led, 1-0, after that period.”

Charlie Plottner and Cam Woods each had a goal and an assist and Matty Gardner and Brendan Brigham also tallied. Duncan Bailey and Patrick Daley had single assists and Ben Plottner made 17 saves.

Trinity pulled within 4-3 before Graham scored his first goal on a power play with four minutes remaining and into an empty net with 51 seconds on the clock. Hanover (10-4, 9-2) visits Salem on Saturday.

Kimball Union 2Northfield Mount Hermon 1

Northfield, Mass. — Veeti Kohvakka made 24 saves to improve the Wildcats to 19-4. Paul Dore and Sullivan Mack scored second-period goals for KUA, which received assists from Zach Taylor and Jack Clamer and visits Holderness on Friday.

Boys Basketball

Sunapee 71, Newport 54

Sunapee — Zach Belisle exploded for 27 points to lead the Lakers (10-3 overall, 9-2 league) over the Tigers (2-12, 1-11).

Belisle’s season-high total included three 3-pointers. Brady Grzanna added 14 points, Jordan Chappell had 12 points and Matt Nangeroni had 11.

J.T. Blaine had a game-high 22 points for Newport. Cole McNamara added 10 points and Chase Hamilton had eight.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, when Sunapee hosts Mount Royal and Newport hosts Mascoma.

Sharon 44, Blue Mountain 39

Sharon — The Phoenix (7-4) held on in the fourth quarter to beat the Bucks.

Freshman Tyler Chapin led Sharon with 16 points. The Phoenix led, 36-26, through three quarters before things tightened up considerably in the fourth. Fisher Kelley added 10 points and Taylor Leonard had eight.

Sharon heads north to face Craftsbury on Friday night.

Montpelier 69, Oxbow 63

Bradford, Vt. — The Olympians’ Matt Emerson had 17 points but the Solons rallied in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Oxbow went on a 15-4 run in the third quarter to lead, 49-45. Montpelier answered with 24 points in the fourth to steal the win. Orin Mahikoa chipped in 12 points. Bryce Ilsley and Adam Maxwell each added 10 points for Oxbow.

The Olympians (6-5) visit Randolph on Friday.

Wilton-Lyndeborough 51 Mount Royal 44

Wilton, n.h. — The Warriors took control in the second half to beat the Knights.

Mount Royal (8-8 overall, 7-6 league) led, 25-23, at halftime. Louis Larosiliere had 13 points, including eight from the free-throw line. Mateo Hoffman added 11 points and Brendan Moorehouse had 10.

The Knights will visit Nute on Friday night.

Williamstown 59 Thetford 48

Thetford — Jake Colby had 24 points and Eli Dunnet added eight but the Panthers tumbled to 8-3.

Williamstown “went from a 3-2 zone to a 1-3-1 and we just couldn’t hit a shot from outside,” said Thetford coach Jason Gray, whose team routed the Blue Devils on the road earlier this season. “The tables were turned, because at their place, we hit ever shot we took.”

Thetford visits Harwood on Friday.

Fall Mountain 66, Stevens 61

Claremont — Ethan Johnson made five 3-pointers and had 17 points but the Cardinals came up just short in the hunt for win No. 1 this season.

Derrick Stanhope added 16 points and Josh Stithen had 15. The Cardinals scored 24 points in the third quarter to trail, 51-50, heading into the fourth.

Stevens (0-11) hosts Plymouth on Friday night.

Mount Royal 63Wilton-Lyndeborough 46

Wilton, n.h. — Alexis Matte had 25 points, eight assists and five steals to pace the Knights (12-4 overall, 11-3 league).

Mount Royal led, 38-16, at halftime. Sophie LaRose added 17 points and Jacinta Hogan had nine.

The Knights visit crosstown rival Sunapee on Tuesday night.

Blue Mountain 28White River Valley 16

South Royalton — The Wildcats (6-6) suffered through an offensive drought in falling to the Bucks.

“Defensively, we played a pretty good game but we couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean,” White River Valley coach Tim Perreault said.

Sophie Howe and Hannah White each had four points for the Wildcats, who play today at Rivendell.

Kimball Union 50 Deerfield 45 (ot)

Deerfield, Mass. — The Wildcats scored seven of the extra period’s nine points, all of them coming from junior guard Maddy Haynes, who finished with 16 points. Jenna Santos added 15 points.

KUA visits Vermont Academy on Friday night.

Hanover Wins at Home

Hanover — The Marauders claimed five of the top seven places to cruise to a home victory.

Hanover’s Evan Nichols returned from a trip to Finland to compete in the Junior World Championships to win with the two longest jumps of the night, one of 32.5 meters and the other of 31.5 meters. Teammate Mason Winter was second followed by Sunapee’s Cameron Summerton in third.

“The hill is in excellent shape and the crews did a great job getting it into the shape it was in,”

Hanover coach Tom Dodds said. “The skiers all jumped really well despite blustery winds and snow squalls, that what impressed me most.”

Felix Estes took fifth for the Marauders, ahead of Tristan Meyer (sixth) and Tage Colberg (seventh). Sabin Mitchell won for the Hanover girls and finished ninth overall. Sister Sophie Mitchell was 10th overall, second for the girls.

Alpine Skiing

Hanover Wins At Crotched Mountain

Bennington, n.h. — Hanover defeated five opponents in dual giant slalom Wednesday at Crotched Mountain.

Wesley Stocken was first in 28.51 seconds and Eric Goodney was third in 28.70. Theodore Ruth was sixth in 29.65 and Owen Stannard 10th in 30.54.
