CLAREMONT – The search for a new city manager has been narrowed to three candidates, Mayor Dale Girard said Wednesday.

Girard said the council will be interviewing two candidates on Friday and the third candidate next week. Names are not being made public at this time, said Girard, adding that it will likely be a few more weeks before a council decision is announced.

Applications were received from New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Arizona, California, Colorado, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Vermont, Girard said in September.

Municipal Resources Inc., a consulting firm hired by the city to conduct the search, reviewed the resumes and chose several candidates for essay questions. Preliminary background checks were done, and Municipal Resources then selected candidates for phone interviews before recommending three to the council.

The last city manager, Nancy Bates, resigned in June after several months on the job. She was the fourth person to hold the full-time role in the last 10 years, the Valley News reported at the time. Former Claremont Fire Chief Rick Bergeron has been serving as interim city manager.
