Privilege must not shield anyone from accountability
The reports of an alleged rape involving Cornell University fraternity members are deeply disturbing. The allegations must be investigated fairly, and the accused should be presumed innocent unless and until guilt is established. If they are found guilty, they should face appropriate consequences.
What troubles me is the possibility that wealth, status, or access to powerful lawyers could influence whether accountability follows. An Ivy League education can open doors to positions of great influence — as lawyers, physicians, financial advisers, and elected officials. But a prestigious degree alone is not enough to earn our trust. Integrity matters, especially for people who may one day hold positions of responsibility. If serious misconduct is proven, it should have consequences.
This case also raises broader questions. Is this an isolated incident, or are there other assaults that have gone unreported? Universities and communities should take allegations seriously, support those who come forward, and ensure that fair investigations lead to meaningful accountability.
