The Dartmouth College women’s volleyball team hosted the Dartmouth Invitational over the weekend at Leede Arena and accomplished something it had not done in over a decade: defeat a Power Four opponent.
On Sunday, the invitational’s final day, the Big Green beat Boston College 3-1, winning the first two sets 25-20 and 25-14. Dartmouth dropped the third set 25-17 but battled back to seal the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Maddie LaFata and Riley Imamura each had 14 kills in the Big Green’s first win over a Power Four team since 2015 and their first win over the Eagles since 1998.
The victory capped off a solid weekend for the Big Green. Dartmouth dropped its first match on Friday to Binghamton 3-1 but defeated Quinnipiac 3-1 on Saturday.
Zori Brown led the way for Dartmouth with 14 kills in its win over the Bobcats, and first-year Clementine Tebbe notched 14 blocks, which is a single-game program record. Brown also led the team with 19 kills in the loss to the Bearcats and was rewarded for her weekend efforts by being named the Ivy League’s co-player of the week (with Penn’s Addison Pollock) on Monday.
The Big Green (5-4) hosts New Hampshire on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and visits Harvard in its Ivy League opener on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Women’s soccer keeps winning streak going
The Big Green entered last week ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Soccer Coaches poll for the East Region in Division I and picked up another victory on Sunday, blanking Bryant 4-0 at Burnham Field.
Anna Leschly — who was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday — scored twice for Dartmouth in the win. Emmanuella Frimpomaa and Madison Rose each scored and added an assist. Maeve Theobald added two assists, while Addison Ball and Kate Ryan each added one.
Now on a four-game winning streak, Dartmouth (6-1-2) is set to open Ivy League play on Saturday when it hosts Penn at 3 p.m.
Men’s soccer falls to No. 24 Bryant, beats No. 18 Vermont
The Big Green opened last week with a close 1-0 road loss to No. 24 Bryant on Tuesday. TJ Jeffreys had three saves in the loss. Dartmouth mustered four shots on net but could not get one through.
Dartmouth followed that loss with a big 3-1 win on Saturday at Burnham Field against No. 18 Vermont.
Ben Bilden, Eidur Baldvinsson and Bo Robbins each scored for the Big Green. Trenton Blake had two assists, and Hudson Kohler added one. Jeffreys recorded five saves.
The Big Green (2-3-1) hosts Princeton Saturday at 6 p.m.
Zalc named Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week
Senior kicker Owen Zalc, who was 2-for-2 on field goals from 50 and 51 yards in Saturday’s 24-20 football loss to No. 7 Lehigh, was named Ivy League special teams player of the week for his performance on Monday. This marks the seventh time in his Big Green career he has earned this honor.
Zalc and Dartmouth open their Memorial Field schedule against Monmouth on Saturday.
Men’s hockey ranked second in ECAC preseason poll, 11th nationally
Coming off a season in which the Big Green won its first ECAC tournament championship, had its most wins in program history and returned to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1980, Dartmouth found itself picked for second place in the ECAC preseason poll released last week.
The Big Green, with 110 points and two first-place votes, was behind only Quinnipiac, which had 120 points and 10 first-place votes.
In a more recent poll released this week by U.S. College Hockey Online, Dartmouth ranked No. 11 in the country.
Along with the poll, the ECAC released its preseason all-league team, which included Dartmouth forwards Hayden Stavroff and Hank Cleaves and Big Green goaltender Emmett Croteau. Stavroff was a unanimous selection, along with Quinnipiac forward Ethan Wyttenbach.
Dartmouth will look build on last year’s historic season beginning on Halloween when it hosts Alaska Fairbanks.
Men’s golf opens season with a strong start
Dartmouth opened its season with a sixth-place finish (8 over par) at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate in Seekonk, Mass., over the weekend. Tyler Brand and Benjamin Wang led the Big Green, tying for 13th individually (2 over).
The Big Green visits Yale on Saturday.
Men’s tennis opens season
The Big Green competed over the weekend at Harvard’s Chowderfest and picked up some wins.
On Friday, Dillon Beckles beat Harvard’s Evan Sharygin in singles (6-4, 7-6 (7)), and Kornel Halmos and Enrique Collar topped SMU in doubles (6-2).
Enrique Collar won a singles match (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) against Yale’s Jim Ji. Beckles picked up another singles win (6-3, 6-4) against Brown’s Cole Oberg on Saturday.
Sunday marked the final day of competition and featured three Big Green singles wins. Leo Pade beat Harvard’s David Wu (6-1, 6-3), Beckles defeated Ji (6-1, 7-5) and Halmos defeated Sharygin (6-7 (1), 7-6 (3), 10-7).
Dartmouth will next compete at the Ted Farnsworth Invitational in Princeton, N.J., beginning Friday.
Women’s tennis at ITA All-American Tournament
Michela Moore and Peyton Capuano got their seasons started over the weekend down in Cary, N.C., at the ITA All-American Tournament.
Arkansas’ Jimena Gomez defeated Moore in singles (6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2), and Mississippi State’s Gianna Oboniye beat Capuano (5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6)).
A pair from the University of Florida defeated the Big Green duo in doubles (6-4, 6-3).
Dartmouth hosts the Fall Foliage Fest beginning on Friday.
Sailing shows well over weekend
The Big Green competed in several events over the weekend and had some strong finishes.
Alders Kulynych-Irvin finished third at the NEISA Women’s Singlehanded Championship hosted by Boston College that wrapped up on Saturday. Ben Sheppard (18th) and Sam de los Reyes (20th) finished in the top 20 at the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship, also hosted by Boston College, which wrapped up on Saturday.
Elsewhere, at Saturday’s Hatch Brown Trophy hosted by MIT, the Big Green finished sixth. At the Nicholas Barnett Trophy hosted by Bowdoin on Saturday, the Big Green had two boats finish third and fourth. Finally, at Saturday’s Regis Trophy hosted by Boston University, Dartmouth finished 10th.
Looking ahead, the Big Green will compete at the Eagle Invite hosted by Boston College on Saturday, as well as the Hoyt Trophy hosted by Brown, Mrs. Hurst Bowl hosted by Dartmouth and the Match Race New Englands at the Corinthian Yacht Club, all of which occur on Saturday and Sunday.
Cross country has solid showing at home meet
The Big Green men finished fourth and the women were seventh at the Maribel Sanchez Souther Invitational on Saturday.
Connor Foley led the way for the men, finishing fourth as an individual in 24 minutes, 53.1 seconds. On the women’s side, Virginia Kraus was the individual runner-up, finishing in 20:55.7.
Up next for cross country is the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 2 in Bethlehem, Pa.
Field hockey losing streak moves to three
Dartmouth dropped both of its contests last week, first falling to Harvard 2-1 on Friday at Chase Field, then dropping a 1-0 contest on Sunday at Maine.
Lucia Campaño had the Big Green’s goal in the loss to the Crimson, and goaltender Kylie McKinley had 17 saves. McKinley also had seven saves in the loss to Maine. Despite the narrow defeats, McKinley earned recognition as the Ivies’ co-defensive player of the week on Monday, sharing the honor with Harvard’s Elin van Sante
The Big Green (1-4-0) will look to stop their losing streak on Friday when they host Penn at 3 p.m. and welcome Vermont on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Softball welcomes new staffer
Jazmine Esparza, who was most recently the head softball coach at Colby Community College in Kansas, is joining the Big Green as an assistant.
Esparza, who played her college ball at the University of Central Florida, also had assistant coaching stints at Kansas Wesleyan University and College of the Canyons in California.
“I am beyond excited to join the coaching staff here at Dartmouth,” she said in a news release. “I have known coach (Hillary) Smith for about 12 years, and coaching alongside her is a blessing. I am excited to see the vision she has for the program come to life.”
The Big Green, which went 10-23 overall last season, begins a new era next season with Smith replacing former head coach Jen Williams, who resigned in May.
