Nation deserves serious leaders
The United States is being run like a banana republic and it is doing us great harm.
President Trump is like the dictator of a banana republic. By his own admission, he makes decisions based on “intuition”, doesn’t waste time reading and knows he’s right because he’s a “genius”. Unfortunately, this “genius” is making disastrous decisions such as the war with Iran, tariffs and abandoning science, attacking higher education, ignoring climate change, and underestimating the threat of another pandemic. He’s undermined the rule of law by weaponizing the Department of Justice to persecute his political enemies, putting his thumb on the scales of business competition, ignoring international treaty obligations and engaging in massive corruption to benefit his family.
The United States’ success rests on a government of checks and balances, and professionally managed departments and institutions. It is not well served by a single person making decisions based on intuition. We need Departments of State, Treasury, Defense and Justice run by competent people, not the president’s lackeys. We need institutions like the Center for Disease Control, the Federal Reserve and USAid to be run by experts insulated from politicians.
As we approach the midterms and, not too soon after, the long campaign for the next presidential election, I dearly hope that we will never make the mistake again of electing someone who appeals with the charisma of a banana republic dictator. I hope we elect serious people who understand how to govern a country like ours.
