Local Roundup: Lebanon Tennis Rolls to Another Easy Win

Lebanon — A pair of 8-0 victories in the top two singles matches set the tone for the Lebanon High boys tennis team in a 9-0 sweep of visiting Goffstown on Wednesday afternoon at the Carter Community Building Association courts, the Raiders improving to 2-0 on the young season.

The Raiders’ Terran Campbell blanked the Grizzlies’ Sam Heienreich at first singles, and Jacob Peress added a shutout victory at No. 2. Noah Didehbani (8-3), Owen Johnstone (8-2), Ben Ask (8-5) and Noah Ryder (8-3) also won in singles.

All three doubles teams also won by convincing 8-1 scores. Campbell and Peress took No. 1 doubles, followed by the similar scores from Ask/Johnstone and Didehbani/Ryder.

The Raiders made a run to the NHIAA Division II state championship match last season before falling to Portsmouth by a 5-4 score. Despite losing star Max Reed to graduation, Lebanon is now off to a fast start after a pair of 9-0 wins.

The Raiders host Milford on Friday at 4 p.m.

Girls Tennis Hanover 9, Trinity 0

Manchester — The Marauders (3-0) buzzed to a third straight dominant win in as many starts, rolling over the Pioneers at Derryfield Park.

No. 1 Rine Uhm and No. 5 Bri Laycock both shut out their foes, 8-0, and No. 6 Mindy Wu was an 8-1 winner. Izzi Davis, Margaret Werner and Ellen Lamm completed the singles sweep with 8-3 victories, and the Maruaders finished by surrendering just three games in their three doubles wins.

“The girls did a really good job playing against a team with some tough line calls,” Hanover coach Liz Murray said. “I appreciated their effort today.”

Hanover is back home to host Goffstown on Friday.

KUA 8, New Hampton 1

New Hampton, n.h. — The Wildcats (4-0) secured the victory with wins in five of six singles matches.

Christina Ryan won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5. Hana Caloras won the match of the day at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Sam Vocatura (6-1, 6-0), Erin Gregory-Davis (6-3, 6-0) and Charlotte Greenspan (6-0, 6-0) also won for the Wildcats.

Ryan/Greenspan (8-4), Vocatura/Gregory-Davis (8-0) and Ella Malone/Kelly Do (8-2) won in doubles. KUA hosts Proctor Academy on Saturday.

Track and Field Pelletier Dazzles at Vacational

Essex Junction, Vt. — Rivendell’s Owen Pelletier, competing with Oxbow’s track and field team, broke a pair of Vermont Division IV state records at the 25-team Essex Vacational.

Pelletier won the long jump with a division-record leap of 21 feet, 4½ inches. Pelletier added a second-place finish in the high jump with another D-IV record of 6-2.

The Oxbow boys claimed an additional trio of top-three scores on their way to a seventh-place finish, tops among all D-III teams at the meet. Jon Puffer took second in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet. The 3,200-meter relay team of Evan Flaherty, William Douglas, Skyler Ladd and Puffer also took second. Jake Senecal added a third-place finish in the discus.

The Oxbow girls also took seventh place overall, led by a pair of second-place finishes. Izzy Giesing was second in the javelin with a toss of 78-3. The 1,600-meter relay team of Emily Carson, Claire Cook, Hannah Giesing and Izzy Giesing also took second. The 3,200-meter relay team of Hannah Giesing, Franni Hoag, Cook and Izzy Giesing took third. Both Giesings added fifth-place finishes, Izzy in the 1,500 meters and Hannah in the 800. Brittany Hodges was sixth in the shot put.

Baseball Goffstown 14, Hanover 1

Norwich — The combination of shoddy defense and seven scattered hits doomed the Marauders in their season-opening loss.

Davey Stocken had two hits and Hanover’s lone RBI. Teammate Will Smith had a single, a triple and a stolen base.

Marauder starter Moises Celaya allowed nine runs, eight of them earned, struck out one batter and walked three during three innings’ work. Reliever David Lehmann didn’t allow any runs for three innings, but the wheels came off during the seventh when the Grizzlies (4-1) scored five runs, four of them earned.

Hanover visits Lebanon on Friday.

Randolph 21, Woodstock 6

Randolph — The Wasps came out on the short end at the Galloping Ghosts, dropping to 0-2 on the season.

Kyle Weirether was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Woodstock. Hunter Balch also had a pair of hits. Andy Seipel was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Owen Tarleton had a hit and scored two runs.

Woodstock visits Windsor on Tuesday afternoon.

Softball Goffstown 18, Hanover 0

Norwich — Freshman Becca Wilson went the distance again for the Marauders (0-2), who otherwise struggled in their date with the Grizzlies. Hanover pays rival Lebanon a visit on Friday.

Girls Lacrosse Rutland 12, Woodstock 10

Woodstock — The Wasps lost their second straight close game to open the season despite a four-goal performance by Grace Vosburgh.

Woodstock led, 7-6, at halftime and was within striking distance the whole way before Rutland rallied late to get the victory. Lauren Kaija added two goals and one assist for the Wasps. Abby Kaija also had two goals. Miranda Johnson and Nikki Sweeny each scored. Goalie Megan Dalton had six saves. The Wasps (0-2) host Chelsea on Monday.

Mount Anthony 18, Hartford 2

Bennington, Vt. — The Hurricanes dropped a tough matchup with the D-I Patriots.

Emily Ruffing and Morgan Pero scored for Hartford. Michaela Ricker had an assist. The Canes (0-3) host St. Johnsbury on Saturday.

College Baseball Dartmouth 9, Cornell 3Dartmouth 3, Cornell 1

Ithaca, n.y. — Piecing together the pitching staff in a rare midweek Ivy League doubleheader, Dartmouth (13-20 overall, 7-5 league) was able to limit the Cornell lineup to a combined nine hits in the two games to sweep the host Big Red and catch Yale at the top of the Red Rolfe Division standings heading into two key twinbills this weekend.

Dartmouth catcher Adam Gauthier led off the sixth inning of a 3-3 tie in the opener with a hit, advancing on a sacrifice bunt and infield out before scoring on a passed ball. Gauthier added an insurance run with an RBI sac fly in the seventh as the Big Green scored five times to win going away.

Chris Burkholder, the last of three Dartmouth pitchers, grabbed the win by retiring all eight Cornell batters he faced.

The visitors went triple-happy in the fourth inning of a scoreless game to take control of the nightcap. Dustin Shirley and Kyle Holbrook delivered back-to-back three-baggers to get on the scoreboard, and Michael Ketchmark followed with an RBI sac fly for a 2-0 lead. Rob Emery’s RBI single in the sixth made it a 3-0 game, and Marc Bachman took the win with two innings of shutout relief.

Dartmouth and Yale play their doubleheaders in Hanover on Saturday and Sunday, starting at noon both days.

Women’s Lacrosse Colby-Sawyer 16, Rivier 5

New London — The Chargers won their third straight game with a dominant showing against visiting nonconference foe Rivier.

Caitlyn Whearty led the attack with five goals, giving her 120 for her career, the eighth-most in program history. Nicole Lavigne added four goals and five ground balls. Sara Berry had three goals, six ground balls and caused six turnovers. Bailey Starr added 12 draw controls.

Goalie Meghan Castellano had three saves for the Chargers (9-6), who are back in action today at Southern Vermont.

Men’s Tennis Colby-Sawyer 5, Southern Maine 4

New London — The Chargers served the Huskies (7-1) their first loss of the season, improving their own record to 9-5.

Colby-Sawyer won two of three doubles matches to lead off the day, including an impressive 8-0 victory by Ross Kenney and Alex Wright. Dean Boodakian and Ryan Sawyer then won, 8-4, for the other Chargers’ victory in doubles action.

The Huskies won the top three singles matches but Colby-Sawyer prevailed at the bottom of the ladder. Ryan Broderick (6-0, 6-0), Kenney (6-1, 6-1) and Boodakian (7-5, 6-3) all won their singles matchups.

The Chargers host Rhode Island College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Rugby KUA 52, Kearsarge 5

Meriden — The Wildcats emerged in a match that was closer in on-field action than the final score would indicate.

Xavier Manning started the scoring for KUA with a 60-meter run off a steal. Arthur Hwang scored a try from 5 meters before Busara Hall and Jorge Manzur also added tries. Will Robbins-Cole added three conversion kicks.

Kearsarge’s Ryan Anton scored from five meters just before halftime to make the score 26-5. Antonio Suer, Hall and Robbins-Cole added scores in the second half for the Wildcats.

Road Cycling Hanover Visits Killington

Killington, Vt. — The Marauders’ club squad had a pair of cyclists compete in C Division competition on a hillclimb road race at Killington on Wednesday.

Arturo Johnson finished first in the C level, for first-year cyclists, in 21 minutes, 25 seconds, to cover the uphill 4.3-mile course. Grant Woods took second for Hanover in 22:14.
