The Dartmouth Club of Idaho just emailed all Idaho alumni concerning a Sept. 12 alumni get-together at a Boise winery. A family member has major surgery the day before the gathering, so I can’t make it.
Beyond that, however, the only alumni meeting I would now attend is one in opposition to the Trump administration’s authoritarian takeover of our cities, our institutions and our foreign policy. I also strongly oppose Dartmouth President Beilock’s utter failure to take a strong stand against Trump’s brazen attacks on academic freedom and scientific research in the United States. She even went so far as to assert that faculty and staff should only comment on matters that concern them and the college.
If an impending dictatorship doesn’t concern us all, why did Dartmouth alumni even bother to get an excellent liberal arts education? Wake up! Less wine and more activism!
Even if you disagree with my point of view, doesn’t defending democracy and the Constitution bring us all together?
If there’s a Dartmouth contingent at the anti-Trump protest in Boise on Labor Day, Monday Sept. 1, I’ll be there.
Thank you for your consideration. I trust I’m not alone.
Will Browning, Dartmouth ’78
