CANAAN — The branch of a large oak tree lays across several damaged headstones, most of which date to the 1800s, after falling overnight at Sawyer Hill Cemetery in Canaan last Friday.

Noel Everts, whose property abuts the cemetery, said he and his wife have been asking the Selectboard and town manager for years to have the tree removed because it poses a hazard.

“We told them we’d be lucky if it made it through another year,” he said.
