Lyme Center — As Dartmouth skiers battled Vermont to a draw in Alpine competition, the Big Green’s Nordic counterparts helped the home team take a narrow lead through the first day of the Dartmouth Carnival on Friday.

Dartmouth owns 456 points through the first day’s action. The Catamounts are 40 points back, with Middlebury a distant third at 341 points.

The Dartmouth men not only won the 3×5-kilometer freestyle relay, a second Big Green unit took second, although that didn’t factor into team scoring. Fabian Stocek, Gavin McEwen and Callan DeLine recorded a time of 36 minutes, 43.0 seconds for the victory.

New Hampshire overtook Dartmouth in the women’s relay, although the Big Green’s Abby Drach posted the fastest lap in 13:56.0.

Cross country competition took place at the Craftsbury (Vt.) Nordic Center, moved earlier in the week by a lack of snow at Hanover’s Oak Hill.

At the Dartmouth Skiway, the Big Green’s Foreste Peterson — fresh off NorAm Cup races in Colorado last week — won the women’s giant slalom in 2:07.51, about a half-second ahead of Vermont’s Paula Moltzan with Dartmouth’s Stephanie Currie placing fourth.

Another NorAm Cup competitor, Dartmouth’s Brian McLaughlin, rallied from fourth place in the first run to second overall in the men’s GS (2:04.13).

Alpinists move over to the Skiway’s Thomas trail for slalom action today. Cross country resumed in Craftsbury with the men’s 10K classic.

Hanover — Senior Josh Hartley scored a pair of goals as Dartmouth (9-12-3, 6-9-2 ECAC Hockey) defeated Rensselaer (6-24-1, 4-14-0 ECAC) at Thompson Arena.

Hartley scored his second power-play goal in as many games 15:10 into the middle period and hit the empty net with the Big Green on the penalty kill with 1:08 to play, giving the team its first shorthanded tally of the season.

“We held the fort at the end,” head coach Bob Gaudet said in a news release. “Devin (Buffalo) was huge for us with some big saves at key times.

“It was a close one throughout and we had to be solid defensively from the goalie on out,” Gaudet added. “We played really well as a five-man unit in our own end that allowed Buff the opportunities to see pucks and makes those saves.”

The Engineers battled all night, scoring on their lone power play with just 18.6 seconds remaining to make it a 2-1 game and spoiling Devin Buffalo’s shutout bid for Dartmouth.

Buffalo made 29 saves, one more than RPI counterpart Chase Perry.

Friday marked Hartley’s second career two-goal game and his first since a wild 8-8 game against Northeastern on Dec. 30, 2013 as a freshman.

After going the first 23 games of the season without scoring a goal, the senior from suburban Vancouver now has three in the last two games with the most recent serving as the 10th of his career and his second collegiate game winner.

Playing defense for the first time at Dartmouth, senior Grant Opperman picked up an assist on Hartley’s first. Freshman Jamie McLaughlin had the second helper on the opening score, the second of his career.

The Big Green is back in action tonight at home against No. 6 Union.

Troy, n.y. — Behind a career-best three-point game from Eleni Tebano and another solid game from goaltender Robyn Chemago, the Big Green (4-15-0, 6-19-0) blanked the Engineers (6-12-1, 9-20-2) at Houston Field House to break a seven-game losing streak.

Tebano, a senior, factored in Dartmouth’s first three goals. She netted the game-winner with 1:32 left in the first period, earned an assist on Christina Rombaut’s second-period goal and put the Big Green up, 3-0, with her second goal of the game 5½ minutes into the third period. Mackenzie St. Onge closed the scoring for the Big Green in the final four minutes of play.

Emma Korbs, Kennedy Ottenbreit, Hailey Noronha, Tess Bracken, Alyssa Balker and Cecilia Lopez all ended the night with assists. Chemago stopped 32 shots as Dartmouth completed a season-series sweep.

The Big Green heads across the Hudson River to visit Union College this afternoon.

Men’s Basketball

Yale 73, Dartmouth 64

New Haven, Conn. — Alex Copeland scored 14 points in 16 minutes off the bench as Yale defeated Dartmouth.

Trey Phills added 10 points and Jordan Bruner had nine points, a team-high eight rebounds and four blocks for the Bulldogs (14-6, 6-1 Ivy League), who won their fifth straight game and eighth in their last nine to stay on the heels of Princeton in the conference standings. Yale shot 57 percent.

Evan Boudreaux, with 15 points, was the only player to score in double figures for the Big Green (4-16, 1-6), who have lost seven of its last eight.

Boudreaux finished the game 6-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the line, but the Ivy League’s leading rebounder was limited to a career-low three rebounds, which still tied him for the team lead with three others. No other Dartmouth player scored in double figures.

Dartmouth led midway through the first half, 20-19, but trailed 40-30 at the break.

The Big Green scored the first five points of the second half, but that was as close as it got, with Yale pulling away to go up by as many 19 and leading by double figures until the final seconds.
