It was the regular-season finale for both teams and their only meeting of the season — so far. They could play next week in the NHIAA Division III playoffs.
The Cardinals (15-3 league; 18-3 overall) will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, while Mascoma will likely be No. 14.
Stevens led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter, but Mascoma rallied within six in the third quarter behind Schwarz, a 1,000-point scorer whose 42-point night was 10 fewer than his season high.
The next-highest scorer for the Royals was Tyler Findley with four points. Stevens’ Zach O’Brien (20 points), Nick O’Brien (15), Henri Bourque (12), Parker Smith (11) and Noah Spaulding (10) reached double figures.
“We were a little sloppy at times tonight,” said Stevens coach Matthew Baird-Torney, whose team suffered no let-down following Monday’s big victory over Hopkinton. “We know Alex is a great player, but it was going to take more than him to beat us tonight.”
The Royals fell to 10-8 in league play and 10-11 overall.
“They were more physical, stronger and quicker,” said Mascoma coach Jim Barry. “They also shot the lights out. Our defense wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad.”
Four of the Cards’ players who reached double figures sank at least one 3-pointer.
