St. Louis — Matt Holliday homered, Carlos Martinez threw seven strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep to their NL Central rival.

The Cardinals scored twice in each of the first two innings against former Dartmouth College pitcher Kyle Hendricks (1-2). Chicago, the first team in the majors to 11 wins, had won three of its previous four.

Anthony Rizzo hit his fourth homer of the season in the fourth and added an RBI single in the eighth for Chicago.

Reds 6, Rockies 5

Cincinnati — Tucker Barnhart hit a game-ending single in the ninth inning, and Cincinnati overcame a bullpen meltdown and took advantage of a Colorado baserunning blunder.

Colorado appeared to tie the score 3-3 in the seventh when Dustin Garneau doubled with two outs and pinch-hitter Ryan Raburn lined the ball into right field for what appeared to be a single. But the Reds threw to third before the next pitch, and Garneau was called out on appeal by umpire Adrian Johnson for missing the base.

White Sox 2, Angels 1

Chicago — Chris Sale became the major leagues’ first four-game winner, allowing two hits in seven innings to lead Chicago over Los Angeles.

Sale (4-0) allowed a pair of singles by Mike Trout and an unearned run.

Mariners 2, Indians 1

Cleveland — Taijuan Walker allowed just an unearned run over six innings, Norichika Aoki had a two-run triple in the second and Seattle beat Cleveland.r.

Nationals 3, Marlins 1

Miami — Bryce Harper doubled in a run and Yusmeiro Petit pitched four innings of relief to help Washington beat Miami.

Petit (1-0) allowed one run after starter Joe Ross departed in the third inning because of a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

Athletics 5, Yankees 2

New York — Kendall Graveman tossed three-hit ball into the seventh inning and struck out eight, pitching Oakland past slumping New York.

Burns and Chris Coghlan hit consecutive doubles off Nathan Eovaldi (0-2) to start a three-run fourth inning. Josh Reddick had an RBI single and Stephen Vogt added a sacrifice fly, but Oakland third baseman Danny Valencia strained his left hamstring when he was cut down at the plate on Aaron Hicks’ rocket throw from medium-deep left field.

Tigers 3, Royals 2

Kansas City, Mo. — Jordan Zimmermann made his third straight scoreless start, Victor Martinez drove in the 1,000th run of his career and Detroit held on to beat Kansas City.

Francisco Rodriguez served up back-to-back homers to Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez in the ninth before striking out Mike Moustakas to leave runners on first and second.

Orioles 4, Blue Jays 3 (10)

Baltimore — Caleb Joseph doubled off Joe Biagini (0-1) with two outs in the 10th inning and scored on Josh Thole’s passed ball.

Mychal Givens (1-0) worked the 10th for Baltimore.

Dodgers 5, Braves 3 (10)

Atlanta — Justin Turner gave Los Angeles the lead with a 10th-inning double and the Dodgers beat Atlanta to snap the Braves’ four-game winning streak.

Phillies 5, Mets 4 (11)

Philadelphia — Peter Bourjos drove in the winning run on an infield single with two outs in the 11th inning to lift Philadelphia over New York.

Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda hit consecutive homers and Neil Walker had four hits for the Mets.

Rangers 2, Astros 1

Arlington, Texas — Cole Hamels extended his career-best winning streak to 10 games, Rougned Odor had a two-run homer and Texas beat Houston.

Hamels hit the first two batters of the game, gave up three straight singles to start the second and surrendered a leadoff hit in the third. But the Astros couldn’t score, helping Hamels (3-0) by making an out on the bases in each inning.

The ace left-hander allowed rookie Tyler White’s fifth home run in the sixth but combined with reliever Sam Dyson to strand the tying run at third with one out in the seventh.
