SOUTH POMFRET — After a year’s hiatus, the Mount Tom Farmers’ Market is back at a new location.

The first market of the year is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the parking lot at Suicide Six in South Pomfret. It will run every Saturday, rain or shine, through Oct. 16.

Previously, the market was held at the Mount Tom parking lot in Woodstock, but the rental cost became too high, said Neil Lamson, who manages the market.

Last year, the market did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Woodstock Inn & Resort offered use of the South Pomfret-based Suicide Six parking lot for free.

As of Tuesday, there were six vendors officially signed up, but Lamson expects around a dozen will be there for opening day and “probably more than that as the season progresses,” he said. “You never know who shows up on the first day.”

The market is still recruiting vendors. It costs $10 to set up for one day and $40 for the whole season.

Those interested can contact Lamson at 802-763-2070 or foxxfarm22@gmail.com.

“We’ve always tried as a farmers market to keep our expenses down and pass the savings onto the vendors, and the reason that it’s only $10 a day to set up is we want people to try it,” said Lamson, a former Pomfret Selectboard member who runs Fox Crossing Farm with his wife, Alice.

The Mount Tom Farmers’ Market was started in 1982, and Lamson has been involved for around 20 years. Instead of having booths or tents already set up, vendors bring their own or sell their wares from their vehicles.

“It’s an old tradition,” Lamson said. “That’s the way the farmers markets used to be.”
